Ethos, Logos, Pathos, and The Challenger Reagan’s use of ethos, logos, and pathos condoles citizens across America. The President establishes his credibility and trustworthiness by sympathizing with the audience. At the beginning of the speech he states, “Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger” (Reagan 1). He then creates a feeling of togetherness by saying, “We mourn their loss as a nation together” (Reagan 2). He achieves the purpose of ethos by sharing his feelings with everyone.
In 1974, former President Nixon resigned from office and Gerald Ford became the temporary president. One of the first executive orders that Ford did was pardon Nixon for his crimes against the United States. The entire scandal had, “driven a stake into the heart of traditional national politics.” (Farber, 27) This controversy was not only publicized nationally, but severely damaged the American people’s already withering relationship with their government.
Effectively, Reagan utilizes rhetorical devices in his speech to powerfully convince the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the rest of Eastern Europe to open up the Berlin Wall barrier which separated East and West Berlin! For example, Reagan states, “But in the West today, we see a free world that has achieved a level of prosperity and well-being unprecedented in all human history. In the Communist world, we see failure, technology backwardness, declining standards of health, even want of the most basic kind-too little food.” This is quote demonstrates logos because the author presented facts about how successful the Democratic world is in contrast to the unsuccessful East side. The fact that the Communist world has failure, technology backwardness, decreasing standards of health, and even a minimal food supply, shows how by taking down the wall, freedom can solve these issues and lead to prosperity for the Communist world.
President Nixon is one of the most famous Presidents in American history for being the first one to resign from office. While Nixon is famous for doing such an unthinkable act, he is also the one that gave one of the best and most well known speeches in political history, The Checkers Speech. The speech was given by (Senator at the time) President Nixon when he was running for Vice President on General Eisenhower’s Presidential ticket. A newspaper, the New York Post, had a front page with the headline "Secret Rich Men's Trust Fund Keeps Nixon in Style Far Beyond His Salary"; the article alleged that people were donating to a secret fund that Nixon had for his personal benefit in trade for political favors.

In response to their rights being infringed upon, several groups led marches to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the mistreatment that they have had to endure. Six hundred marchers assembled in Selma on Sunday, March 7, and were met by Alabama State troopers who promptly ordered them to turn around. This event was televised all over the world and it disgusted the viewers who witnessed the horrific police brutality.
Reagan was an impressive communicator, and was very charismatic. In a study conducted by Mio et al. (2005) of U.S. presidents’ inaugural speeches, Ronald Reagan was ranked as one of the top three charismatic presidents in the twentieth century. Reagan appealed to American’s sense of understanding through his use of metaphors and symbolism that went beyond the words. Two impressive examples include Reagan summoning Gorbachev to “Tear down this wall” and referring to the Soviet Union as the “Evil Empire”(Meese, 1999).
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the thirty-fifth President of the United States, invokes the mood of patriotism throughout nations in order to encourage worldwide peace in his Inaugural Address. At the time of the speech, the United States was going through the height of the Cold War, in which America was in an Arms Race with the Soviet Union. He stated frequently his regret towards his resignation; when this passage is read aloud, it is stressed heavily on pathos and that Nixon defended his decision with the selflessness of his own emotions and did what is better for the country (“American”). In his speech, Richard Nixon establishes his credibility and then goes on to show the logic of why he is resigning along with sparking the reader’s emotions in defense of him through the use of frequent fallacies and rhetorical devices.
