In 1898 Spain and the United States got into a war. The war would essentially end Spain’s empire and propel the United States onto the world stage. The United States got into a war with Spain because the United States, driven by imperialism and social darwinism, desired to have foreign territories. Imperialism is the policy of extending a nation’s authority by territorial acquisition and/or by the establishment of economic and political control over other nations. The United States wanted to spread democracy and American ideals, that mentality is imperialism and led to the US challenging Spain for colonies which led to war. Social Darwinism is the application of Darwinism to the study of human society, specifically a theory in sociology that individual or groups achieve advantage over others as the result of genetic/biological superiority. Social Darwinism was introduced by Herbert Spencer, a british philosopher. He wrote about how certain traits certain groups of humans had made them better than other groups. He used that as a reason why the French, Spanish, and British had the right to go into “savage” countries and “take care” of the “biologically inferior”. This mentality was one of the main reason the United States went to war with …show more content…
Beveridge used the ideals of social darwinism as reasons to why the United States should retain the philippines, a colony Spain original controlled. In his address to congress in favor of retaining the philippines he said “It is elemental. It is racial. God has not been preparing the English-speaking and Teutonic people for a thousand years… He has made us the master organizers of the world to establish system where chaos reigns.”(Beveridge 45). He straight up says that it is a racial thing and that the English-Speaking (white) people are superior to others. He goes on to say “He [god] has made us [The American people] adept in government that we may administer government among savage and senile peoples.” “They are not a self-governing race. They are Orientals, Malays, instructed by Spaniards in the latter’s worst estate.”(Beveridge 44-45). He says that Americans are biologically superior to the “Orientals” he talks about how it is our duty to go and “help” the “savage primitive, biologically inferior”
Was it right for the US to go into war with Mexico? In 1846 Mexico and the United States went into war for many different reasons. In 1821, Mexico had declared their independence from Spain, this ultimately was probably not the best decision. In 1844, James K. Polk was elected president and was a strong supporter of the Manifest Destiny. The war between the United States and Mexico was unjustified.
The Spanish-American War started in April of 1898 and lasted until August of 1898. The United States wanted to provide aid to Cuba to help them gain freedom from Spanish rule. Although this was a short war, it ended in terms more than favorable to the United States
The first reason is the main reason the U.S joined the Spanish-American war is territory and resources. According to a document by Jason Colby, Spain took control of Cuba, the Philippines Islands, and Puerto Rico. The U.S was worried that

Imperialism DBQ Throughout the history of the world, imperialism has played a major role. Imperialism is one nation taking over another by social, economical, political aspects. This policy was introduced and also practiced in Europe during the 1800’s and the early 1900’s. The foreign policy of Imperialism was the product of The Industrial revolution.

The Spanish-American war was fought for humanitarian, geopolitical, and Commercial reasons. that prompted the United States to take a larger Global role once the war was won. many Americans begin to wonder if the United States should have become an imperial power. The American people were assured by McKinley the aim of the war was to protect the sovereignty of the Cuban people. Not to create an empire.
Spanish-American War in 1898 was a conflict between the United States and Spain. It plays an important role by ending colonial Spain in the Americas. With the ratification of the treaty of Paris in 1899, the US has become an imperialist with an empire stretching from the Caribbean to the distant Pacific. American War - Spain rooted in rebellion against the Spanish regime broke out in Cuba in 1895 due to many social problems, economic, political and serious on the island of Cuba. When Imperialism made its way to American colonies, so did Victorianism. America exploded with new technological advances and a new vision on the future. This strategic move was a positive merger between America and Britain. Many of the inventions that were introduced are still in use today for travel and leisure, but most are currently being used in import and export trades. Because there was an Imperial system, the Victorian age was apparent.
The Spanish-American War was a conflict in 1898 between Span and the U.S. caused by an intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. Cuba was revolving against Spain a couple times what was leading to several wars. Madrid declared the war first, then Washington. After the sinking of an US Navy Battleship, the democratic party pushed the administration of Republican President William McKinley into a war, which he didn't want to do, but still did it. The United States expected Spain to surrender Cuba to them.
He also wrote that we have “our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war because of Manifest Destiny, which eventually expanded the U.S. This was said to improve the American economy. A second reason the
Although many agree that war is no laughing matter, and that there is no such thing as a just war, there are many reasons on why referring to the Spanish-American War as a “splendid little war” could be considered quite accurate. One reason is that although the war was waged against what was once considered one of the world’s largest empires, with a military that had at one time conquered and subdued a large portion of the new world, there were only around 3,000 American casualties that occurred during the short war, and only 380 of those deaths were from combat. Most of the deaths had occurred from something the Americans couldn’t really defend themselves against, which was disease. In the era in which the war was fought, deadly diseases,
There were many important causes and effects of the Spanish American War. In the 1880’s the U.S. wanted to achieve manifest destiny and so they expanded out west and took control over the Native Americans. There were four different motives that the United States could’ve used to imperialize: political and military interest and economic interest were mostly with trading. Humanitarian and religious interest, to help those that you have allied with or to spread religion and the rich help those who were “under privileged.” Lastly, social darwinism, the idea that you are superior than someone else.
Social Darwinists first began influencing Western thought in the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth century. They argued that “white European men were wealthier and better because they were more highly evolved than white women, people of color, and any other race”. (the making of the west, Hunt, pg. 724) During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Social Darwinism influenced the lives of European women, colonial subjects, and racial minorities by implementing law and policies to further show their superiority, they “promoted racism and sexist behavior”. (hunt, pg.724)
Imperialism has been forced in different places around the world for many centuries. As Cambridge Dictionaries states, imperialism is a “system in which a country rules other countries, sometimes having used force to get power over them”. Nowadays, Imperialism is still present in a disguised way; we even use it sometimes without us knowing that we do. We can notice while reading Derek Walcott’s biography, that he is a Saint Lucian poet. He has the perfect inspiration for the poem “The Sea is History”; his own home, his island.
