American exceptionalism, the United States has succeeded in becoming the most politically influential nation through its history of liberty and democracy. Because of this idea the United States has a mission to spread its values of freedom. The United States demonstrates many qualities while on the track to becoming the greatest nation, since the Civil War up until the end of the First World War and even after that. Patriotism, neutrality, religion, respecting our country’s documents, freedom, sympathy, self-preservation, expansion, industrialization, etc. these qualities/values helped America become the great nation it is. The Statue of Liberty’s quote: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” invites immigrants into our land allowing them to settle here giving them freedom from their countries. We value our freedom and offered those who didn’t have freedom a place to call their home. By allowing others to settle here we became a mix of races therefore when WWI came about we stayed neutral, for as long as we could, a quality which was actually very valuable as being a new country with all our new immigrants it made sense, we did not simply have an American culture. We helped free countries fighting rebellions to become independent, we can relate to this as we had our own rebellion against England therefore we were sympathetic. We helped free Cuba from Spain, after fighting the Spanish-American War we also gained Puerto Rico, Guam and eventually Philippines from Spain. This victory helped our expansion process each area we helped free now has an allegiance to us, which in a way is hypocrisy as we helped them gain independence but now they are now either under our control as territories or in Cuba’s case they became bound to our business interests which also allowed us to intervene if there are any “threats” made to Cuba and control who they could/couldn’t trade
