American exceptionalism, the United States has succeeded in becoming the most politically influential nation through its history of liberty and democracy. Because of this idea the United States has a mission to spread its values of freedom. The United States demonstrates many qualities while on the track to becoming the greatest nation, since the Civil War up until the end of the First World War and even after that. Patriotism, neutrality, religion, respecting our country’s documents, freedom, sympathy, self-preservation, expansion, industrialization, etc. these qualities/values helped America become the great nation it is. During the Reconstruction and era of the Freedman America demonstrated the value of religion. The constitution states …show more content…
they come here seeking freedom. The Statue of Liberty’s quote: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” invites immigrants into our land allowing them to settle here giving them freedom from their countries. We value our freedom and offered those who didn’t have freedom a place to call their home. By allowing others to settle here we became a mix of races therefore when WWI came about we stayed neutral, for as long as we could, a quality which was actually very valuable as being a new country with all our new immigrants it made sense, we did not simply have an American culture. Even till this day American culture is a mix of all …show more content…
We helped free countries fighting rebellions to become independent, we can relate to this as we had our own rebellion against England therefore we were sympathetic. We helped free Cuba from Spain, after fighting the Spanish-American War we also gained Puerto Rico, Guam and eventually Philippines from Spain. This victory helped our expansion process each area we helped free now has an allegiance to us, which in a way is hypocrisy as we helped them gain independence but now they are now either under our control as territories or in Cuba’s case they became bound to our business interests which also allowed us to intervene if there are any “threats” made to Cuba and control who they could/couldn’t trade
Founding the country of the United States of America was no easy task. It took great fortitude and ambition from the pioneers. The qualities of the American settlers who were intrical to the development of the most powerful nation in the world include devotion, bravery, and perseverance as evident through the expansion Westward, the American Revolution, and the reunification as a nation after the Civil War. Americans proved their bravery as they risked their lives for the sake of Westward expansion. A successful nation is not only dependent on its people but its land.
The U.S used American exceptionalism to justify Native American removal by trying to trick Natives into believing they can be “helpful” to each other and by using power that they knew the natives didn’t have. In source C it states, “listened to our professions of friendship; we called him brother, and he believed us.” This shows the trickery used by Americans towards the Natives, causing them to be forced out of land. Similarly it states, “He thought the U.S government would trick, bribe, and bully Indian tribes as it carried out the law. The trickery, He feared, would lure Indians into selling their lands.
Throughout the 20th century the United States would soon develop into a superpower, for example events like the Berlin Airlift which consisted of supplies being brought from America to berlin promoted democracy. Although this is just one event that shows that the the United States is a promoter of freedom throughout the world during the 20th century, they are also different events that occured to provide evidence that the united states is as well a defender and promoter in and out of the state. The United States developed into the promoter and defender of democracy throughout the 20th century by American Imperialism, promote world peace, and enforcing equality among citizens. America imperialism is just one piece that illustrates the promotion
Famous French historian Alexis de Tocqueville once said, “America is great because she is good. If America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” (qtd. in Carson 651.) In “Recovering America’s Exceptionalism,” Ben Carson explains how we are losing touch with the values that once made America a great country.
The documents that were made available represent two very different understandings of American Exceptionalism. In the book American Exceptionalism: How the United States Became the Last Super-Power, Alfred Bester says that “American Exceptionalism is very real” and that it has two parts. First he explains how Seymour Martin Lipset said that because the United States was “created through an explosive revolutionary event,” the only way they could make their nation legitimate was through “strict adherence to the ideological commitments to liberty, equality, and democracy that lay at the nation’s roots.” He then explains how Frederick Jackson Turner said that because the nation possessed “vast tracts of unclaimed land,” everyday people could become

United States gave their help to the Filipino general Emilio Aguinaldo in his fight against the spanish government. Once Filipino dismissed and got rid of the Spanish colonial government, Aguinaldo made himself the new leader of the Philippines. When the United States refused to acknowledge his authority and instead sent troops to reside in the islands, the Philippine Republic under Aguinaldo's leadership declared war on the United States. Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem that motive the United States to blend with Great Britain in its imperial goals, and to take up the "white man's burden" . I do not agree that the burden was a good one.

According to the text “ Manifest Destiny is the belief that the United States had an absolute obligation and right to spread democratic settlement, briefly lost force once the American outskirts filled in with American settlement” (Barnes & Bowles, 2014). Some people might put Manifest Destiny as the idea of taking it by force, the attitude of taking and conquering lands and territory no matter what it cost. American exceptionalism is the belief that the United States is a remarkably free country in light of equitable goals and individual freedom. According to (Tyrell, n.d) “ in its classic forms, American exceptionalism refers to the distinctive character of the United States as a uniquely free nation based on democratic ideals and personal
The United States is different from other nations and we know this because of American Exceptionalism. American Exceptionalism is the idea that the Unites States is unique from other nations because we were founded on the principles of Induvial liberty, property rights, and equality among all people. This is true, we established this country because we didn’t want to be how England was and have a “dictatorship”. In this paper, I will be arguing the idea of American Exceptionalism and explaining how the United States is different from other nations. There are people who realized that America was “different” than other nations.
Americans have often believed that they were exceptional. American exceptionalism is the claim that Americans have “a moral purpose of acting altruistically in defense of freedom and democracy... with the aim of maintaining peace, of spreading justice or of defending human rights.” (New World Encyclopedia). They also believe that the United States must be a positive role model for the world.
American Exceptionalism leads other countries to think that Americans are narrow-minded. American Exceptionalism is the belief that the U.S. follows a different from the laws or norms that govern other countries. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines narrow-minded as lacking in tolerance or breadth of vision. After surveying a conglomeration of people from different countries, Daily Mail concluded that America/ns are viewed a couple of different ways. Addis Ababa from Ethiopia said Ethiopians think that America is filled with gold.
The United States gained a lot of power and resources and respect from innovating and expanding in the nation's history. Most of these historical topics that were discussed have brought up ideas of what it means to be American. Innovation and expansion can have a really big effect on a nation's identity. When a country experiences innovation and expansion it leads to new ideas and different ways of thinking that change the way people view their countries. These historical events helped shape America's identity and let it be known they care about innovations and any progress that is made.
American Exceptionalism was coined by Alexis de Tocqueville in his book Democracy in America. To illustrate how the American way of thought is superior to the other ways of the world, Tocqueville expresses that the American way of thought is distinctively unique and special. This distinction is exemplified through liberty, egalitarianism, individualism, populism, and Laissez-Faire Economics. These qualities prove America’s exceptionality and difference from other countries. Although American Exceptionalism originated in the early 1800s, the idyllic values Tocqueville paints in his book can be seen throughout American history.
The United States has always had an important role to play on the international stage. For the past one hundred years that role has been indispensible, American has been the determining player which has saved the world from Fascism, Communism, and now today’s battle with Islamic terrorism. American power and American leadership was, and is the only guarantor of peace, prosperity, and freedom throughout the world. In 1964 Ronald Reagan said that America is "…the last, best hope of man on earth." The concept of American exceptionalism isn't that America has a perfect government, perfect citizens, or perfect laws; the essence of American exceptionalism is that America is the only nation in the history of the world founded on, by, and for ideas and principles, as opposed to mere
