How green technologies can revolutionize the planet?

Without a doubt, we live in an era of technological advancements. Every day, new gadgets and gizmos are introduced in the market with claims of having more advanced features than its predecessor or competitors. The goal of all these new and improved technologies is to make life easy and convenient. Convenience has become such a luxury that most people cannot do without. How many people can actually make it through the day without their cell phones, laptops and vehicles? Human beings have become so caught up in consumerism that they many have ceased from taking any responsibility for the environment. To most, the environment is a phenomenon that is out there and being looked after by scientists. The reality of the matter is we live in an era where climate change, food shortages and drought are a harsh reality. The answer is vertical farming. The concept of vertical farming capitalizes on the idea of growing plants indoors under artificial lighting conditions. Basically, plants are grown hydroponically, or without soil. Vertical farms are large, multistoried buildings. Crops are stacked one on top of the other under artificial light. Under such conditions, scientists have learned that crops grow much faster as compared to traditional farming techniques. In fact, some estimates predict vertical farms are up to a hundred times more productive than farming on land. Another advantage of this technology is that food can be grown organically because the environment in which the crops are grown is contained. According to some green technology advocates, as land to grow crops becomes scarce and the human population continues to boom, vertical farming may become the new norm by 2050.
