Science underpins the EU food safety policy. EU food safety policy ensures safe & nutritious food, high standards of animal health and welfare and plant protection as well as clear labelling on food packages so that consumers can make informed choices. Since the inception of EFSA, Risk Analysis comprising of risk assessment (scientific evidence & research), risk management (policy development) and risk communication (interactive exchange of evidence & views) is the basic framework for a Europe’s modern food safety system. In a recent EFSA Webinar on Scientific Aspects of a Health Claim Application9, it was explicitly elucidated by the learned speakers that in the event of substantiating any claim, extrapolation of results is not acceptable. For instance, if pilot studies have been conducted for a heath promoting food/ingredient in infants, the same results cannot be useful if the target population is adults. This makes sense because the immune responses & the metabolic rates for an infant would in essence be different from adults. Hence, evidence for a biologically plausible mechanism is crucial. In fact, all the adult group cannot be considered as one because a young adult would be different physiologically from a middle aged & definitely an old person. Similarly, positive effect of glucosamine on improved joint functions cannot be correlated with studies performed on osteoarthritis patients only, conversely, considering studies in healthy individuals recommended.9 An effective dossier for health claim application seeking EFSA approval would require convincing studies on efficacy, Generally accepted scientific evidence, specification of the physiological effect to be considered as beneficial and a claim expressed accurately & reflecting the science as well as in compliance with regulations. With such noble ambition in mind, Eisenhower reminds us in his last speech that intellectual and capitalism should be independent. Food regulation and laws are a normal part of our life. In the early 1900’s, big businesses were ruthless and more concerned with making larger profits than the quality of its products. Also, in that time, the competition between businesses was scarce opposed to today’s market. There are countless number of businesses and companies in which one can purchase their goods from. This causes companies to really focus on the quality of their product in order to please the consumer.
Several acts have been passed that protect the safety and health of United States Consumers. The Food and Drug act of 1906 requires that there be unity and uniformity among food and drug products, and restricts the sale of hazardous goods. The Food Code of 2013 sets standards for food processing. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act ensures that products are not only safe for consumers, but that they are also fully aware of the goods they are buying. These acts beginning in 1906, have protected the public’s health, and prevented illness for over 100 years.

Food labeling had gone through several stages of historical development. Labeling regulations started with the regulatory marks which served as the logistical aids to the enforcement of adulteration laws as well as the levying of duties and taxes on bread. The principle problem of misbranding was the misrepresentation of weight. With minor exceptions, most food was produced locally and consumed locally, so that there was no widespread usage of food labels, and hence no need for extensive regulation of such labels (Food Labeling Regulation, 2001).
