Liberalism and the ‘freedom of the press’
Introduction
A media which is free is a basis or foundation of a functioning market economy and democracy. In our lives media plays an important role and more so with the fact that we can have access to a lot of media sources by using of the gadgets that are all available to most of the people in the world we live in today. This does not only mean the use of social media but also with the traditional forms of communication like for example radio, television, and also newspapers. Thus for democracy to prosper, it is important that the citizen has to have various sources of information and also should have access to forums which are properly conducted for an open and fair debate. The media itself plays

These institutions of power include the political power of the executive government and legislative, the economic power of the business sector, and the cultural and social power of institutions which diverse such as sporting groups and churches. This thus creates dichotomy, since as the consequence of this critical role, the media itself augment a massive amount of power, in that the media shapes and packages the flow of information. Thus the power to promulgate that key information is important to the freedom of the press, and it is the one which is guarded jealously and rightly so (Feintuck, M. …show more content…
Thus it is a very serious deficiency in a democracy if the media fails to be accountable, as it is failure to hold the other institutions which are the sources of power in to account.
The freedom of press is the right that is jealously guarded and hence free speech is a vital tool in a liberal market economy and democracy. It cannot be unchained free speech and that is why restrictions are accepted for economic and social policy reasons. since freedom of press plays an important role in democracy then it has to be dealt with in a manner that privacy is given a lot of respect thus adequate accountability mechanisms should be put in place so that all these rights are exercised in a responsible manner.
There are some of the mechanisms in which the citizens can interact and hold the government responsible or accountable. these mechanisms include for example administration systems, legal remedies, nature of institutions, and the media. There is pluralism of the systems which are unequal and diverse. there are also the non-governmental organizations which are also the sources of power and have impacts on our lives each and every day for example corporations, social institutions which includes churches, sporting associations, trade unions which have different types of
Governmental power is often held by a few, and this also leads to problems as citizens feel that their voices are not being heard. This inequality is not seen only between people and the government, but also different groups of citizens today (gender, race,
The first amendment grants protection for American citizens to have freedom of speech. It protects five general areas: speech, religion, press, right to petition the government, and right to assemble. Freedom of the press is a protection that is necessary for journalists, photographers, news corporations and all media. Without the protection, journalists would not be able to uphold their promise to deliver the truth to citizens who do not have the same access to politics, world news and current events the way the journalism industry does. Ultimately, the first amendment grants the press special privileges, but they are not guaranteed all access.
Powerful Governments A government is to be in charge of the economic affairs, policy, and actions of a country. There are various types of governments, with laws and restrictions that citizens are to follow. These laws and restrictions can easily be taken to extremes as portrayed in George Orwell’s 1984.
My opinion on this situation is that media is overpowered and if it was an official branch congress would have to even out the powers in order for it to work in a reasonable and controlled way. However it becoming an official branch is highly unlikely and will most likely never occur. I do feel that propaganda is taking over the aspect of being free and interrupting your political mindset on issues. Overall I think the media’s powers should be evened out and intertwine other positive aspects into their work rather than
Freedom of expression is one of the laws the forefathers of America made to empower its citizens and also enables them to live in peace amongst themselves. In most countries around the world, freedom of expression does not exist, so there is always war in those countries. In the article “Why the First Amendment (and Journalism) Might Be in Trouble”, the authors, Ken Dautrich, chair of the Public Policy at the University of Connecticut and John Bare, who is the vice president for strategic planning and evaluation at the Arthur M. Blank Family foundation in Atlanta, conducted a research study on the importance of freedom of speech. They used their research findings to support freedom of expressions. They employed claim of policy, claim of fact and also appeal to pathos and logos in their argument of the importance of the freedom of speech.
The availability of mass media in the United States has grown throughout the last few decades. The media serves the vital function of informing citizens about political issues, yet there are certain media effects, like slant and framing, that can help political elites manipulate people by using mass media as a tool. Despite the dangers of media effects, mass media still does a good job of informing citizens about important political issues such as the Watergate scandal, Abu Ghraib, and the legalization of same-sex marriage. The Federal Communications Commission is an independent agency put in place by way of a congressional statue in which gives them the authority to regulate interstate communication.
When thinking of the media you think they are reporting the appropriate and accurate information not based on any personal opinions and feelings. Also one would not think the media would be reporting based on one side of politics or the other. The media is extremely biased when it comes to politics and news. While some of the media is conservative-biased I believe the mass media is liberal-biased. Majority of media outlets are liberal companies, media personnel and journalists will identify themselves as democrats and liberals more so than republicans or conservatives and lastly the left side (liberals) of the mass media is persuasive on what information to report.
Each institution has a different purpose which carries out a certain role in society. Each Institution also works closely with another and creates a functioning society. These institutions can be categorized into four groups. i.
Media Censorship: Good or bad? On the last decades, the freedom of speech has become one of the most discussed and relevant topics inside general population and governments. When it comes to human basic rights, it is clear that the free and open shared of information and communication between all parts plays an important role to ensure a healthy development and progress. However, to think that every country will be willing to spread all kinds of ideas and opinions without placing a boundary would be a utopian assumption.
A media source which ignores or censors important issues and events severely damages freedom of information. Many modern tabloids, twenty four hour news channels and other mainstream media sources have increasingly been criticized for not conforming to general standards of journalistic integrity. In nations described as authoritarian by most international think-tanks and NGOs media ownership is generally something very close to the complete state control over information in direct or indirect ways. Undesirable consequences which occur due to media imperialism are: • Commercially driven ultra-powerful mass market media is primarily loyal to sponsors i.e. advertisers and government rather than to the public interest.
But the positive interaction of government-press-society does not mean that each party must lose the function of its functional idealism. For if each existence is not approached with independent and interdependent responsibilities and obligations, it can be ascertained that each party will not be able to assume its rights and responsibilities. It means that the government should be given authority, as an authorized and responsible body to regulate the interests and spheres of its citizens. The press must remain authorized to carry out its distinctive social control functions.
For example, if the audience wants to watch EastEnders on a Monday night then they ultimately decide if they want to watch it and if a story that’s posted in a newspaper is appealing or not then the mass audience has the power to read it or not. It is believed that "Different media has different amounts of influence." (Katz & Lazarsfeld, 1955) So, like Marxism its similar in the sense that if an owner who owns a media company they have the control of what gets to be put out and viewed by the mass audience laying their political or non-political beliefs. One
Government Government is a system of social control under which the right to make laws, and the right to enforce them, is given to a particular group in society. Government power can be held by one individual, a few, or a majority. Government come in different forms. The basic law determining the form of government is called the constitution and may be written, as in the United States, or largely unwritten, as in Great Britain.
To elaborate, media sources such as newspapers and news channels can be identified as either ‘right-wing’ or ‘left-wing’ politics. In reference to ‘The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Politics’, right-wing politics can be defined as the
The media is supposed to be just like a warrior fighting with a pen or like a mirror which shows us or strives to show us the bare truth and astringent realities of life. However, in recent years the media has, like other agencies, come under the influence of politicians. Therefore, the media no more writes about the people’s grievance but in support of the ruling government party. It has been contaminated by political influences. Today, the media has many vital roles in a modern democracy such as; political lies, reviling the truth to the public as well as helping to aid with the hypocrisy of the nation.
