Why do we allow society to determine our level of success? Today inequality is the highest it has been since 1928(Desilver). There is a wide income gap between rich and poor(Desilver). Success is thought to be earning a high income, being married, or based on your demographics. We as individuals are treated better or worse based off of how people characterize or categorize others. People are treated differently in society because of income, social status, and gender. The differences in income affect how society and the economy views people. People with higher income ratios typically are treated better and have better opportunities. Income can have both a positive impact or negative impact on how you are seen. In fact according to Jane Gaskell, "Women earned 52.8% of what men earned in 1911, 58% in 1971 and 66% in 1996” (Gaskell Nd). This statistic proved that women earned significantly less than men throughout history. Even after women fought for equal pay it was still not fully achieved. Women’s fight for equal pay has come a long way.

Like I mentioned earlier, people compare each other depending on their success. Those who are lower on the economic scale will be viewed lesser than those who are high up on it. That's honestly just how it is, the people who do not have as much success will be compared to those who have a lot of success. That is why people feel threatened by those around them who are successful. Like at least no one is going to compare me to a Kardashian, but they could with any other girl in this school.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average among full time workers, men work 8.75 hours a week and women work 8.01 hours. The difference totals to 9% more hours put in on average by men. This is a major reason for why a gap exists between men and women, as there is a distinct difference in time put in by employees by gender. Full time jobs are considered to be a minimum of 35 hours working a week, and the “80 cents to a man’s dollar” statistic simply takes the earnings of all the individuals in that pay range. It becomes clear then that the statistic is ignoring a rather large work time disparity and making what a man earns in nearly nine hours equivalent to what a female earned in eight.

Surprisingly, many of these inequalities are still experienced today. Out of 144 countries , the World Economic Forum ranks America 45th on their Global Gender Gap Index.
The United States is currently facing an economical problem that involves males and female differences within the workplace. Males are given bigger and sometimes even better rewards for doing equal amounts of work as their female counterparts. Females are frequently not receiving the same wage even if they can complete the same job of a male. Also, females are less likely to get promoted within their job if they are competing against a male. A source states, “Women are now more likely to have college degrees than men, yet they still face a pay gap in every single education level,
