Growing up, my parents pushed me to do my best in school; I didn’t question it much, although looking back, I recognize that schooling is a vital component to be successful in life. I will be attending UNR this fall, the first in my family to do so. Being a first generation college student, my parents cannot provide any information regarding college classes, scholarships, or tutoring. I’ve worked diligently throughout high school but I cannot venture into college blind; TRiO would be a highly beneficial program enabling me to reach my potential in college.

As a first generation college bound student, after joining Upward Bound, I have gained the skills to recognize and be proactive when I am struggling academically. I am not only able to identify aspects that is causing me difficulties but also able to create a realistic plan that fits with my learning process. I have also gained the confidence, motivation, and skills to balance and multi-task a schedule that includes a full-time academic schedule, multiple extra-curricular activities, and community services. For example, when I decided to take dual enrollment college courses through Minnesota’s Postsecondary Education Option program, I still maintained my many commitments to Harding Senior High School and volunteer activities. At first it
Allowing me to take part in the Pathway Program would dramatically improve my chance at succeeding in my future career objectives. The Pathway Program would provide me with a plan that would guide me from my senior year in high school, to and through NOVA, and then finally to a four-year university. One of the major benefits that this plan would provide me with is the removal of stress that I would otherwise have from having to research and apply to every college that I am eligible for. The Pathway Program would also provide me with recommendations surrounding the courses that would allow me to have the highest chance of success in my career field. Throughout high school, I have faced many challenges: frequent house relocations, lack of a

I know that this program will be a very useful help in being college ready when I start in the fall and not being sure in what I have to and don’t have to do. Describe a personal challenge or adversity you’ve experienced and how you were able to overcome that obstacle (provide specific steps that were necessary) A personal challenge that I have experienced had to do with my whole family. Ever since I was young, dentistry had sparked my interest for my career. Dentistry appeals to me chiefly because I had always wanted to be involved in a profession where I can help people. My love towards human biology especially human teeth also contributes to my career choice. Most importantly, I find human teeth interesting, often fascinating. Due to my compassionate nature, I have since long known that I would want to pursue dentistry as my career because I get to form relationships with my patients, work hand in hand with many people on a face to face basis.
