Can the lyrics in Rap Music be considered poetry? Poetry takes many forms. The work of people such as William Shakespeare and T.S Elliot set the standard of what we perceive a poem or poetry, to be. However, modern poetry’s form is becoming less in the ilk of those who came before and is evolving into something new. Rapping falls somewhere between spoken word, poetry and singing yet is considered the least poetic of those by so many due to its use of profanity and the subject matter in its lyrics. Yet, the poets/writers that are remembered the most fondly (ie shakespeare, poe, elliot) did things in a different way to those before them and are heralded for it.
