Essentially, marriage in the 1700’s was seen merely as a means of birthing heirs and finding a way to financially support yourself, so it resulted in both men and women being devalued. It is universally known that women were often treated as inept and helpless rather than sophisticated people with autonomy and capabilities. In fact, during this time, “married women were consistently compared with minor children and the insane-- both categories of people considered incapable of caring for themselves. To marry a woman was, in one sense, to ‘adopt’ her-- or at least to adopt responsibility for all the circumstances of life with which she entered the marriage” (Teachman 39). Furthermore, when women got married, they would legally cease to exist.
There were multiple social changes after the revolution, from ending the slavery to women’s rights. Although ending slavery and women’s right didn’t happen after hundreds of years after revolution, there were some changes were felt immediately. For example, more people of moderate social class were able to be more directly involved in the government. From the first shots at the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775 to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the American Revolution fundamentally changed American society. Through economic, social, and political changes, the American society was altered drastically. Even before the Treaty of Paris, American politicians and lawyers adopted the Articles of Confederation on November 15, 1777, with a unanimous ratification on March 1, 1781.
Surprisingly, Native American women had more freedom than the white women in the Chesapeake, Middle Colonies, or New England region. Some Native American women were given rights such as controlling land, political power, marriage and divorce in choice. There were matrilineal kinship system, in fact, marriage was not the most top rite of passage for them. A colonial wife had no legal rights but for single women or widows they could run their own business. They were normally married by the age of 13 or 14. They were treated as the inside caretakers.
White men were the only ones allowed to vote to elect government officials. Although men could vote they could only if they were land owners. Owning land was a staple in the early colonial life. Since the eighteenth century, women still try to be equal to men and try to be independent. During the American Revolution, women were dependent on their husband. This meant they had to cook, clean and take care of their children. They were not allowed to do what they wanted.
Adding on to other limitations, women almost had no freedom in their marriage. Before the women’s rights movement, when a woman is married the “husband and wife are one person” but “that person is the husband” (Doc 7). Once a woman is married, her rights and property were governed by the husband. Married women could not make wills or dispose of any property without their husband’s consent to do so.
Women in the 1600s to the 1800s were very harshly treated. They were seen as objects rather than people. They were stay-at-home women because people didn’t trust them to hold jobs. They were seen as little or weak. Women living in this time period had to have their fathers choose their husbands.
Women and African Americans were given more rights such as the right to vote and slavery was abolished after the revolution. Political changes involved Americans truly separating from Britain by destroying any ties they had with the country and it also involved Americans stating their political beliefs and changes which were different from what they were taught by the British. Social changes included Americans viewing blacks and Native Americans as equals
The author Andrew Curry thinks that workers today are unfulfilled because they would rather work a job they do not like and earn more money than work a job that they are passionate about and earn less. He also talks about how people seem to work more than relax in today's age like when he says “instead of working less, our hours have stayed steady or risen.” (Curry, Kirszner and Mandell 399) the evidence that he uses to connect his view is the amount of people who complain about their jobs. Nowadays everyone knows a person that constantly complains about his or her job but they still work that same job because of the financial gain. Many people today hate the job they work but that same job is the reason they have a car, house etc.
The New England and Chesapeake colonies were established during the early 1700s. Despite the population originating from England, the regions had distinct societies. This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.
If women continued to gain power and independence then the fabric of society would disintegrate and gender relations would be altered, which men did not want to happen. Americans had a choice of keeping the practices and ideals of the revolution concerning women or maintain the social
Impact of American Revolution through time Almost all aspects of the lives of Americans were somehow affected by the spirit of the American Revolution. The attitudes of American people towards religious life, women’s rights, voting and slavery were changed forever because of it. There was a drastic change in social and political life after independence.
Laws gave men the power over women. They were expected to obey their male relatives and had few rights. Any disobedience is considered an offense to their religion. Women were not allowed to take any career. Their only job is to bear children and run the household.
