For instance, if a sandwich shop just had the word “fresh” on its billboard, it is enough to signify to the passerby that the sandwiches are healthy and hence it is inviting. That same effect can also be achieved with maybe the words “ natural”. Similarly, instead of the use of the fire image in the previous example about the gas bottle, sometimes its just written “flammable” in a bold clear way to signify the flammability and danger of the box. Sound: As mentioned before, symbols come in many forms not only visually but it can be audible. Music is used in advertisement to set the mood of a product or a place. Government organizations often use symbols to portray their power or military strength. Writers also use symbols to convey a message to the reader. In his novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses symbols to help readers track the loss of civility of the boys. The fire is both a symbol of hope and the reckless behavior of the boys.
To human beings songs and music in general play a huge part in our lives. In many situations people turn to music. For example when someone is down or upset they might play an upbeat song to try and help their mood. Another example is when someone might be stressed or just unstrung; they turn to music or a certain song to help calm themselves.
Advertisements help pay an artist’s bills which allows them to make more music. Commercials can also help pay for the costs for tours and artists can make an innumerable amount of money. Promotions can bring a more varied audience to a musician and can help bands gain popularity. By having more people listening to an artist’s music, a musician can be given a sense of reassurance to write more songs. Recently people are debating about whether advertisers should be allowed to use a musicians’ music.

Structuralism and Semiotics Structuralism & semiotics, the general study of signs which developed from the structuralist program, have a complex theory of the way signs work but, in essence, we may say that the categories of meaning (words) are comprised in a system of binary oppositions: white & black, body & mind, the sacred & the profane, individual & collectivity. We are engaged, then, in the study of signs & sign systems. Structuralism analyzes society & elements of society via binary oppositions that it sees as essential to the way the brain works. Post structuralism, on the other hand, sees this binary dualism as an aspect of Western thought & not universal. For postmodernism, meaning & the categories of thought are shifting & unstable.
There are various ways that advertisers use semiotics; images, text and sound but the main and most frequently used symbol in advertising is images. People have become familiar with visuals, especially in our now innovative and creative society. Seeing this advert at first glance may seem simplistic, on a denotative level of course. However, the photograph of a male and a female and their clothing (and lack thereof) portrays an iconic view as the signifier and signified are associated based on their resemblance. There is undoubtedly a male-centric focal point, as the advert presents the view from his level of gaze.
