Throughout history, many famous and important people have given empowering and compelling speeches. One of the most famous speeches in history is “Tear Down this Wall” given by President Ronald Reagan in West Berlin, in 1987. In the speech, the President urges the Soviet Union leaders to free East Berlin from communism and tear down the Berlin wall. He tries to convince the audience that the only way Berlin can move forward is by embracing freedom and individualism. In an attempt to make his speech more convincing and memorable, the President used rhetorical devices such as figurative language and appealed to the SOAPSTone strategy.

The United States responded to the Soviets actions in Germany, Europe, and their national actions. These responses were justifiable, or so many Americans at the time believed.

This division spread anger throughout the world as it became an international crisis. JFK is blurring the distinction between citizen and superior governor by including the people in his proclamation. While describing the hardships and challenges that the country is facing, Kennedy mentions how imperative the occasion is on a global level; in the midst of the Cold War, he reminds his audience of the importance of uniting. Through the use of the lexical field of danger — words such as: ‘defiance’, ‘serious’, ‘risk’, and ‘sacrifice’ — he creates a feeling of tension and urgency, and engages his audience to the concern. To conclude his speech, the President mentions self-guilt on the part of the country on how they had not displayed the “sense of business responsibility” that they should have, a rhetorical strategy that approximates the audience to the government.

So in order to protect his nation, he sought military and economic help from the Soviet Union.

Like the start, there are so many striking lines and rhetoric, which the American president used, to attract attention and be more persuasive, that it will be extremely hard to pick the most powerful. Now let us continue with the first strong sentence, which is "No wall can stand against the yearning of justice, the yearnings for freedom and the yearnings for peace that burns in the human heart.
