Korean Drama Analysis

Watching Korean drama ever since I was around 10 year old, the stories of the Korean dramas were almost always the same. The main female protagonist is poor and the main male protagonist is rich, and the mother in law or the male’s relatives dislike the female. These plots were overly exaggerated, I thought life in South Korea wouldn’t be like this for most Korean people. I am here in South Korea for almost a month now, and indeed there are some truth to Korean dramas of overly exaggerated stories. When I arrived in Korea for a couple of days, my Korean friend, who live in Gangnam, took me out to eat out and shopping at Gangnam. As I observed my surroundings, there are tall apartment buildings, companies buildings, luxury restaurants, fancy bars, and endless small clothing stores. This district was well known for its high standard of living and a location for higher income family to live here. Before I came to Korea, I even heard that Gangnam district is equivalent to the American Beverly Hills. Now that I experienced the Gangnam district in person, I see that it is not only for wealth families to live there, but the poor also resided in on the edge of Gangnam as well. Korean arts and society are embedded with the Han emotion through the separation of social classes and differential in living standard period and also contemporary period. Arirang, the Korean song that sing out the emotion of the struggle people went through. Their sadness was written in the lyrics of Arirang, and even through the melody changes Arirang is still Arirang because the sadness is still there. As the musical study on Arirang concluded, “a song or chorus which reflects the spirit of Koreans going through social change during the period of the late Choson dynasty and Japanese occupation.” I think of the people I saw at the Guryong
