I think I am at the Pseudo-Independence stage of Janet Helm’s model of racial identity development. The town where I grew up didn’t really have much diversity and when I was younger I was oblivious to racism. I didn’t realize that racism existed until I went to high school and started working. One day at work last year the store manager told me to keep an eye on a customer. He had never done that before but I realized it was because the customer was of color. I think that is when I reached the reintegration stage and noticed white entitlement. I made me angry to think that people are judged automatically by the color of their skin.
