The tan sand around the bases with the growing green grass and old worn out cracked dugouts is where I would have been. The Albany baseball diamond was where me and my friends hung out. We would hit old worn out baseballs with the leather coming off of them and run around the aged bases and sleep on the old rickety metal things they called bleachers. The school right beside it also had a playground which we may or may not have supposed to be on. Dairy Dream was just across the street with the delicious smell of hot chocolate fudge and the nose tingling scent of vanilla ice cream that filled the air.
Another day at Fenway. The Boston Red Sox are trailing the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 and Mookie Betts (The Red Sox Right Fielder) comes to the bat for the first time tonight due to a sore arm. Bronson Arroyo (Reds Pitcher) throws a wicked curveball that is almost impossible to hit. But Mookie knew that this ball was long gone. Arroyo thought he was gonna strike out Mookie
There was the casino attorney and the university trustee. There was the business executive and the gastroenterologist. There was the “Statman,” as well as several other local business and professional leaders. And there was me.
I had a baseball game against the White Sox. When I got down there I found out I wasn’t pitching first, so I waited till it was my turn to pitch and when it finally happened it was 5-5 in the top of the 4th and I pitched a no-hitter. I do not remember my first time watching a televised hockey game or my first time going to watch the Blues at Scottrade Center, but I do know that I was hooked. My dad used to to purchase three tickets from a lady at his work to one Blues game a year. She was a season ticket holder and every season she upgraded her seats one row closer to the ice. When I went to my first game, where we sat, who St. Louis played against, or who won are all beyond my recollection, nevertheless I know that whatever events had transpired, I wanted to watch more hockey.
Seventh game, bottom of the 10th and the Chicago Cubs were up 8-7 against the Cleveland Indians with 2 outs. One out, one pitch, one play and it could happen, for the first time in 108 years we could win. One home run and we would lose it all. My dad and I nervously glance at the bases, one hitter, and one player on first. Mike Montgomery throws the pitch.
The dust has settled. A week removed from my first trip to the Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, I am already looking forward to next years meetings in DC. There were no dull moments to be had at the Winter Wonderland, otherwise known as the Opryland Hotel. The energy in the air was palpable. Great baseball minds coming together to inform through workshops, honor those in the "family" and make moves to improve their teams.
“The winning home run”. It was a Friday night at Dodger stadium a really cold night at that time i was only 11 years old in the year 2011. My Dad and I went to watch our favorite baseball team the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the Dodgers vs the Colorado Rockies the Dodgers were going for there second straight sweep so my Dad and I knew the stadium was going to be full of screaming,loud and mad fans. As my Dad and I arrived we were getting out the car when we see the giant lines of Dodger fans trying to get into the stadium just to try to get a ball from batting practice from the Dodgers .

The league found out fast that if you give the emerging superstar a full year, you can take the “emerging” part out of the equation and just call him a superstar. In the past, the face of baseball was scattered but pretty easy to find. I coached the sport for like eighteen years straight until Mr. Daly, our recently retired athletic director, talked me into taking over the girls’ basketball program. For Pete’s sake, I still PLAY the game. The Rebels, my team in the Pioneer Valley Over-Thirty Baseball League, won its second championship in four years a couple weeks ago, and I played shortstop and third base, pitched a little and batted cleanup most games.
