Steroid usage in sports has been a controversial issue since it began sometime around the 1940’s. The conflicting opinions of how steroids in sports should be managed has eventually created what can be accurately described as a whirlwind of confusion. In the two articles “Destroyed” by Peter F. Martin, and “The Designer Player” by Rodrigo Villagomez, the authors differ in their opinions about steroid usage in sports. While Martin believes that steroid users are ruining the game and their bodies, Villagomez thinks that living itself is harming our bodies and that steroid users are heroes for making the game more interesting. However, both authors are attempting to persuade their audiences into believing what they think.
Steroids are the common enhancer to use because it brings results fast. The effects can be worse than the results. Drug abuse can be life threatening. Athletes need to think about their future, such as family, friends, and their own life. Athletes have been using drugss for many years and will keep using for many more.
Steroids should only be used for medical reasons and not for better performance. I cannot seem to understand why athletes would take any kind of drug without medical advice or take any drug with so many hazardous side effects. There are reasons why people do what they do, but after researching performance enhancing drugs, I would not think of any reason to use such a drug with so many ill side effects. In my opinion, if you do not have the natural ability and have to rely on a performance-enhancing type of drug, you should not be playing. Drug testing would be the best idea, but it is still not 100% on results quite yet.
People on this side of the argument only see the negative effects that steroids have on the sport, and on the athletes, that use them. The first argument that this side would make is that the use of steroids in baseball is a form of cheating. Their evidence would be that when player’s use steroids they gain on edge, because of the affect the steroids can have on the body. Some steroids can make a player who has little to no talent at all, and then suddenly, they become one of the superstars in the sport. My point is that engaging in drugs while participating in sports can be very dangerous. Drug testing should be mandatory for athletes for their safety. The reason for drug testing are; teams depend on their teammates to always be available, drugs can change your athletic abilities, and students join sport teams as a positive activity to avoid getting into trouble and the presence of drugs in sports defeats the goal.
