AS91101 - 2.4 Writing Portfolio Piece Two - Cooper Title: Drugs in sports Drugs have become an integral part of any modern day sporting event. Drugs give an unfair advantage to the user and the competitors that are using enhancements are not using their own full abilities to win the Olympic medal or championship. This makes it unfair to other competitors that are not using a drug or other enhancements to compete. Athletes like Lance Armstrong and Nadzeya Ostapchuk not only give sportsmen and women a bad reputation but influence the way the public think about sports and run the risk of addiction and long-term health issues. Such as liver failure and development of breasts.
Steroids are not any different than other drugs: they are addicting. (compound) The stories of athletes that use steroids are endless. Athletes will continue to have health (adjective) issues until the stop using steroids. As stated there are a variety of consequences for athletes that use steroids. By some athletes cheating the game will never be fair for the other athletes.
Trevor Hudson Mr. Donnenwirth British literature 12 December 2014 Drug Use Drug use is something very serious in today’s world. Prescription and illegal drugs are being abused everywhere around us, and one could even say they’re being abused in Brave New World. The people in the new world state do not use as much, but do use a drug. This drug, known as “soma,” is suppose to help you always feel happiness whenever you are depressed, despondent, or just not feeling well; much like people do in our world today. In the world today people use illegal and prescription drugs regularly day in and day out.
Typically, people who double up in quantity or experiment with various drugs are searching for that “first high” sensation. Throughout the film, live interviews of real testimonies were shared showing raw emotion of how they became seriously addicted to drugs and their outcomes. In addition, some of the side effects of being addicted were infections, maggots, blood borne pathogens, and even overdose. The worse part about this addiction would be the withdrawal. Withdrawal from opiates is often extremely difficult and represents a significant challenge to breaking the cycle of
I have an example of how to not act like it. In February of 2017, one year ago, President Trump repealed an Obama-era regulation that would have made it easier to block the sale of firearms to people with certain mental illnesses. (Gonzalez) Referring to the rollback of the Obama era regulation for mental health, Gonzalez squarely lays the responsibility at the feet of Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, quoting, “’ ’Well, it’s a shame the FBI isn 't doing background checks on these mentally ill people.’” Grassley was the sole sponsor of the bill; in response, Gonzalez in a classic derogatory tone strikes at the irony of the political process: “Well, duh. You took that opportunity away last year.” The use of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the speech sets Gonzalez apart from any other speaker on the issues of gun legislation and big money. There is no establishment of authority as Gonzalez is a survivor.
Steroid use in baseball has been a massive problem over the years. Steroids have been on the banned substance list since 1991 but testing did not begin until 2003. Players have been taking performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) since the nineties, but it was not until recently when players started getting tested and caught. The use of steroids has negatively effected the sport overall, the community of fans and children, and also the players; moreover, there are some major consequences if a player tests positive for performance enhancing drugs. Steroid use has been around in the sport of baseball since the late 1980s until the present day.
As of recent, the war on drugs has been a very often discussed topic due to many controversial issues. Some people believe the War on Drugs has been quite successful due to the amount of drugs seized and the amount of drug kingpins arrested. I believe this to be the wrong mindset when it comes to the war on drugs. The war on drugs isn’t a winnable one so we must do all that is possible to assist those who struggle with drug addiction and decriminalize small amounts of drugs. These minor changes in the way we combat drugs will create significant change and have lasting effects.
The next reason people believe using performance enhancing drugs in professional sports is wrong or a social evil is how insanely competitive people get in just a game. In the article “Conceptual Problems with Performance Enhancing Technology in Sport” Emily Ryall talks about how the majority of problems inherent in professional sport, such as whether athletes should be able to take particular drugs, wear particular clothing, or utilize particular tools, 5 Clayton arguably come from a conceptual one based on flawed logic and competing values. Sport is a “human enterprise that represents a multitude of human compulsions, desires and needs; the urge to be competitive, to co-operate, to excel, to develop, to play, to love and be loved,
An article says “Drugs are mixtures of chemicals and because of their structures they can affect the body in many different ways.” Some of these ways are loss of self control and impulsiveness which both relate to Ishmael, because he had no feelings self-control and impulsiveness because he had no consideration of what could happen to him during the war or what he was doing to other people. The text says “Drugs are chemicals because of their chemical structures, can affect the body in many different ways. Some drugs can even change a person's body and brain in ways that last long after the person has stopped taking drugs”. This quote is important because it proves how drugs change and it tells the affects people. Now I will show how Ishmael was traumatised.
John F. Kennedy, and later on with his brother, Robert F. Kennedy. When the autopsy was done, and no pills were found in her stomach, and no glass was found on the crime scene, they searched even further, and found enema. So someone had to inject Marilyn with a lethal dosage of this substance. But why would the Kennedy’s want to kill Marilyn Monroe? Well it is said that Marilyn was threatening to give out political secrets, that could damage the Kennedy’s reputation.
Carter had first allowed a shah to seek medical attention in the U.S. after previously being banned from coming, after the shah was in America, Iranian students attacked the embassy and took hostages. Carter launched a military rescue mission called Operation Eagle Claw to try and get the hostages but, in the end its efforts failed. All he could do was wait and see what happened next. At this time, the American public was frustrated with Carter’s lack action. The Los Angeles Times reported that 60% of the public felt that Carter was too soft in dealing with the crisis (Nelson).
As sports start to become more difficult for athletes they turn to the use of drugs to help them improve more even though the use of drugs are bad for the body. Anabolic Steroid is a drug that is used by many athletes to increase both their strength and muscle mass. It was first used in the early 1930’s that was created to form testosterones to help treat men who were unable to produce enough hormones for normal growth. Anabolic Steroids have many side effects that can occur during the use of it such as very severe acne, rage, violence, depression, etc. Side effects of Anabolic Steroids only start to surface when the user is using more than what is required.
Some police departments use physical standards to legal discriminate against female candidate and this should not be allowed because even if it’s legal discrimination that’s still discrimination. Men are always going to be physically stronger than women that’s how they are built. Some examples of test that discriminate against women are test the involve upper body strength like pull ups, outdated test that have been used for years but have not been updated and “obstacle courses or tests with one cut-off score for everyone, regardless of sex or age” ("Know Your Rights”) In her article for the Gazette, a Colorado Springs newspaper, Debbie Kelly wrote about physical fitness testing being suspended for all of Colorado Springs police officers
The state soon passed additional laws further restricting the sale of the medicine. The laws prevented the sale of thousands of boxes of cold medicine. The laws were far from success. “We still have a tremendous meth problem,” said Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force director Mark McClendon, “But it’s importation. That’s where the problem is… There’s still lots of imported meth in the area.
