In the beginning, Phillip is very unaware of what is going on and where he is . He was forced to go on a boat by his mother and the boat got attacked so now he is stuck on the life raft with an old black man named Timothy and stew cat. Phillip was very confused about what happened and why he was stuck with someone he didn’t know. He began to get scared because he had no idea where he was but he tried to keep calm. Later on in the novel, he can be described as uncooperative when he refused to help Timothy make palm mats and used harsh words towards him when Timothy never did anything. Phillip gets angry because he believed that his disability was stopping him from helping out. It causes them to get into a big fight and Timothy hits Phillip.
Because of this, he and the people around him get consequences that impact them severely. Towards the beginning of the book, he purposely chose not to do well in ELA. After he received a bad grade, Coach Jamison told him that he wasn’t “even allowed to try out” (Avi 23). Philip’s decision to not do well in Mrs. Narwin’s English class forced him to give up track as a consequence. Philip lied to everyone again about being “patriotic” when he hums the Star Spangled Banner—and that Mrs. Narwin suspended him for it.
Overall, as Philbrick closes out the book the tensions in the Native American tribes and the English colonist would lead to King Phillips War. As we continue in Philbrick’s book he goes in great detail of King Phillip or also known as Metacom the son of Massasoit. Phillip began to grow uneasy with the economic balance between the colonist and the Native Americans. This led Phillip to gain followers to aggravate English settlements but, would not kill any settlers during this time and, Phillip would continuing doing this until the English killed one of his own men. This would start an assault by the Native Americans on the English settlements leaving very few survivors to tell about the horrific events.
In this example, Louie’s morale was boosted by Phil’s confidence in him: “I’m glad it was you, Zamp” (132). Phil portrayed that out of all the crewman on the plane, Zamperini became the man that Phil wanted as a partner on the raft which they now depend on for survival. At this point in the story, Hillenbrand revealed Louie’s resilience when confronted with Mac’s untrustworthy act: “The realization that Mac had eaten all of the chocolate rolled hard over Louie... The crash had undone him. Louie knew that they couldn’t survive for long without food, but he quelled the thought” (138).

Some of the practices that were practiced in western world as part of the civilization helped develop the western world socially and economically. The author of the novel offers a concise surgery of western civilization and looks at practices that helped improve civilization in western world. The people of western world had to improve their culture into practices that would favor all human being regardless of their social background.
At the beginning of the book we find out that Philip is a great athlete and the star of the track team. However, when his grade in English stops him from being on the team, Philip starts making up lies to cover it up instead of just telling the truth. While having a conversation with his father he tells him that he doesn’t want to try out for the track team. He says, “I, ah…was thinking I wouldn’t try out” (Nothing 29).
Later, Tommy convinces Emily to play soccer with him and they talk for a little bit, this helps Emily and Tommy realize that they can be happy and have a good time even though their dad is gone. Tommy finally got back to being the football player that he was before and his team starts to win. Tommy’s team, the Brighton Bears end up making it to the championship game. During the first quarter of the game, Tommy injures himself making a touchdown saving tackle.
However, in Carol's house, Phil finds a note from Melissa, saying they went to Malibu. Phil and Carol decide to head to Malibu. When they arrive, Carol decides to tell them that Phil is dead. In "Dead Man Walking", as soon as Carol convinces them that Phil has changed, Phil keeps them at gunpoint and is locked in stocks. He soon finds himself upgraded to more miserable punishments in "C to the T", but is released when he puts out a fire.
But his main concern is getting on the track team. When he asks Ms.Narwin for extra work to raise his grade he finds out that he was moved to Mr.Keegan’s class and she doesn’t want to be bothered by him any longer so she asks him to leave and so he does. Philip is no longer a trouble maker or a victim. He’s right in the middle. Philip at this point has no chances in raising his grade because he is no longer in Ms. Narwin’s class.

Michael tells Francis that have to leave immediately and Francis listens after a bit of time. After they start running back home again the police catch up to them and catch them, Michael is being held down violently causing pain to Michael so Francis tries to help him but the police do the same to him and even threatened to shoot him. Narwin, like the assistant principal suggested and get on with his life. However, he stood strong saying he was expressing his patriotism. People might say he was definite because Ms. Narwin was purposely giving him bad grades. Ms. Narwin said multiple times throughout the novel that Philip is bright and has potential and she even begs the assistant principal to not suspend him.
