What are the conditions when society gets destroyed? Dystopias can be described as an imagined place where everything is miserable. They are characterized by human misery and poverty. The following essay will contain evidence from three stories; The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, and There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury. The authors of the dystopian stories, all demonstrate the theme of an oppressive government which assists them in showing how the government has the power to destroy society by stoning people, putting restraints on them and even using nuclear bombs, which all cause the death of innocent citizens. One important theme in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” is the theme of dangerous tradition.

In the Landlady, a man named Billy Weaver mistakens a murderer for an old, sweet lady and is killed. In The Tell-Tale Heart, a crazy man suffocates his roommate because he thinks his eye is evil. In There Will Come Soft Rains, an entire city from the future is wiped out because of a nuclear explosion, leaving one house standing.
The Boston Bombing occurred during the Boston Marathon in 2013 . Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamarlan set off two bombs near the finish line of the marathon, killing three people and wounding over 260 more . Tsarnvaevs older brother had been killed during a gun battle with the police and Dzokhar had later been arrested. The younger of the two brothers was then put on trial and later facing death on 17 counts and being sentenced to death.

The narrator wanted to kill the old man for only one reason, to get rid of his hideous eye.

South Africa’s paralympic and olympic athlete known as “blade runner” gold medalist, Oscar Pistorius twenty-nine years old, kills law graduate and model who was his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on the morning of February 14th 2013. Oscar claims that he killed his girlfriend by mistake because he thought there was an intruder in his bathroom who put Reeva and Oscar’s life at danger. The court argues weather Oscar shoots at the bathroom door because he thought there was an intruder who was threatening his life or whether he deliberately murders his girlfriend Reeva. Pistorius was found guilty for culpable homicide, South African law which is described as; actions which led to the death of an individual but not with the intend of murder.
One of the thrillers John Travolta has been in was “Face Off”. John Travolta plays Sean Archer who is a very tough, rugged FBI Agent who is still grieving for his dead son Michael. Archer believes that his sworn enemy Castor Troy who is a very powerful criminal is the one who killed his son. Troy eventually get captured by Archer but soon after Archer discovers that Troy has planted a bomb that will destroy the entire city of Los Angeles.
Oedipus, upon hearing this news decides to curse the murderer if he does not come forward with his wrongdoings. The curse begins with; “…Banish this man – never shelter him, never speak a word to him…drive him out…he is plague... ”(266-279) The dramatic irony makes the audience more sympathetic towards the tragic hero because Oedipus did not know that it was himself that murdered and shed his father’s blood. The audience pities and sympathizes Oedipus for he tried to find the murderer by going so far as to bestow a curse on the killer then ends up being the killer.

Imagine if you or one of your siblings decided to murder your parents for financial gain and went through with it. The Menendez brothers were faced with the fact that they could be tried and convicted for exactly that. With the false evidence the brothers created to plead self defense, the conviction was going to be a lot harder than expected. It took 2 trials to finally sentence them to life in different prisons without the possibility parole. Lyle and Erik Menendez were found guilty of murdering their parents for 14 million dollars of inheritance money.
The best villain that I know of is the Shadow man or as some know him Dr. Facilier. The shadow man is from the movie “The Princess In The Frog”. The shadow man turned prince Navine into a frog so that the shadows could rule New Orleans. The fake Navine, who was his non loyal servant, took his place to marry Lottie. The shadow man also messes with people's fate like prince Navine.
