The state could adopt a number of different alternatives. First, the State could disperse or concentrate the most violent and disruptive inmates throughout the system by meticulously planning the best options (Mears 2006). Second, the State could build segregation cells in each prison for each facilities ' most disruptive inmates (Mears 2006).
Since early times supermax prisons were used as a deterrence for extended criminal activities. We have seen facilities such as Alcatraz as early examples of supermax facilities which has been around since mid-1900. . There are many interesting points I found out about supermax prisons after reading this week article. The purpose behind super maximum security prisons is to prevent hard criminal from committing further crimes and keep them away from committing more crimes while incarcerated or inflict injuries t themselves therefore they are locked away from the rest of prison population. Supermax prison are not new and have been around for a long times as well as have been used in many different countries throughout the world.
Solitary confinement, in my opinion, is cruel and unusual punishment. If there was not a mental-health crisis in America, and there was in fact a rehabilitation-focused prison system, solitary confinement would be greatly reduced and used much more sparingly. Supermax inmates are allowed one hour of recreational time by themselves. What can inmates do to work their way out of a supermax facility? Due to inmates limited ability to interact with other inmates, there is limited opportunities to get into trouble; therefore, it is also hard to show an improvement in ones attitude. For an inmate to work their way out of a supermax facility, they more often than not have to flatten their time. Studies conducted on the effects of long term solitary confinement have shown evidence of acute sensory deprivation, paranoid delusional belief system, irrational fears of violence, resentment, inability to control rage, and mental breakdowns (Schmalleger, 2015).
the overcrowding in the prisons has become a real issue considering that they do not place mentally ill inmates in a separate section like they are supposed to. Every prison is required to have separate sections to know how to supervise everyone. There are buildings that are for minimum security, medium, maximum, and medical where most of the mentally ill are located. Those who are not in their separate sections will cause many problems in the overcrowded sections. the absence of privacy adds tension to each and every inmate.
Another issue that the American prison systems were facing was their constant practice of locking away mentally ill individuals to very long prison sentences that only seriously worsened their conditions, and even made their chances of overcoming mental illness, nearly impossible. Even medications that were prescribed to these individuals made them suffer serious and sometimes even worse, side effects. Although some states banned the high rates of mentally ill individuals to prisons, this only meant they were more targeted and thrown in jail for petty offenses by police. What are your thoughts about the prison system? Today 's prisons are so bad that prisons in the United States hold 5 percent of the US population. Many people get sent to jail cause of the 3 law strike because a lot of minorities are caught with drugs. Plus the government is wasting 75 billion dollars on these facilities instead of using the money in a better way like making programs for the prisoners that need help with mental health or other stuff.
Does it make sense to lock up 2.4 million people on any given day, giving the U.S the highest incarceration rate in the world. More people are going to jail, this implies that people are taken to prison everyday for many facilities and many go for no reason. People go to jail and get treated the worst way as possible. The major problem we have today is that prisons shouldn't deal with taking care of the mentally ill, that's the mental hospital facilities job. The people that work in this type of setting need to be patient with the mentally ill. Its not easy to deal with people that are mentally ill, they require so much attention. Putting mentally ill people in a prison is the worst thing to do, it makes their mental illness worse due to being in isolation.

Humans are selfish creatures who are willing to sacrifice the lives of the people around them simply for recognition. But humans are not born this way. Humans are not doomed to a cruel, evil fate the second they are born.
Imagine being a child imprisoned for committing a crime for which you did not understand the consequences. Alone and afraid, with only hardened criminals and psychopaths as adult role models, you live in fear. Through a vicious combination of physical, sexual, emotional, and mental abuse, there is no option but to turn back to crime as an adult, and continue the cycle. This is a daily reality for thousands of American juveniles. Yet, we continue to call it the juvenile justice system.

Evidence does suggest that children who have more than one risk factor present are more than likely to be involved in criminal activities (Hopkins Burke, 2016 p. 232).
