ABSTRACT
The focus of this paper is to present the role of MHRD in implementation of ICT in higher education system in India. With the World moving rapidly into digital Media and Information, the role of ICT in Education is becoming more and more important and this will continue to grow and develop in the 21st century.
Information and communication technologies (ICTs)—which include radio and television, as well as newer digital technologies such as computers and the Internet—have been touted as potentially powerful enabling tools for educational change and reform. When used appropriately, different ICTs are said to help expand access to education, strengthen the relevance of education to the increasingly digital workplace, and raise educational quality by, among others, helping make teaching and learning into an engaging, active process connected to real life.

In this 21st century, there has been considerable attention given to the role that ICT can play in economic social and educational change. ICT in education has the potential to contribute significantly to sustainable economic development, to enhance public welfare, to strengthen democracy to increase transparency in governance to nourish cultural diversity and to foster international peace and stability through educating the children, youth and adults.
