IS THE YOUTH CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT TOO LENIENT ON YOUTHS? The Youth Criminal Justice Act is the federal legislation that replaced the young offenders act in 2003. The Department of Justice defines the act by stating: It is the law that governs the Canadian youth justice systems.It applies to youth who are at least 12 years old but under the age of 18, who are alleged to have committed criminal offences. The novel, Run away Devil, is about a 12 year old girl named J.R who was driven by forbidden love to kill her family in order to be with her boyfriend. J.R along with her boyfriend Steinke, murdered J.R 's family but Steinke claimed that it was J.R alone who slit young Jacob 's throat. J.R is the youngest Canadian to ever be convicted of multiple homicides. With such brutal murder and such planning it was the ruling that surprised me the most. Since J.R was under the age of 14, she could not be tried as an adult. As a result she could not be sentenced to life in prison according to the YCJA because she was 'underdeveloped '. She will be released before her 19th birthday, putting citizens lives in danger to such a sick minded child who has not had the chance to grow up in today 's society and technology, which in my opinion will result in more stress and anxiety and may motivate her to commit another gruesome crime to go back to prison because that 's basically the only life she is used to. Not to mention the fact that she has no family to go back to, she will be out on her own as an adult with nothing. The YCJA is going to be releasing a murderer who will be a danger to society and this is why the act is too
