There are around 1,000 people who are wrongly convicted of crimes each year, and Adnan Syed is to be believed to be one of the many who has been wrongly accused of murder. Adnan has been accused of strangling his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, and burying the body. This case was committed about 17 years ago and is still uncovering new evidence about the murder. Sarah Koening, the narrator of the podcast, takes a closer look at the reason why Adnan was accused and looks into the state's case. The Serial Podcast was created as a spin-off of The American Life and to share the story of Adnan Syed. The information given throughout the Serial Podcast implies that Adan Syed was falsely convicted of murdering Hae Min Lee. A reason that helped the state …show more content…
This is the most crucial time window because somewhere between 2:15 and 2:36 Hae Min Lee was killed. A friend of Adnan's stated that she saw and was talking to Adnan after school in the library. “Adnan came in. He sat at the table. And we weren't really close friends or anything like that, but we knew each other… And he told me that him and Hae had broke up.… And he was like, oh, well, she is seeing this other guy, some white dude. But he was pretty chill about it. He was just like, you know, well, if she doesn't want to be with me, then that's fine. I just wish the best for her-- that kind of attitude.”(Koening #1). Asia was also able to state that they were talking for an average of 15 to 20 minutes, but her boyfriend also states that he saw Adnan in the library from 2:15 to 3:00. Since Adnan was at the library that proves that he could not have killed Hae and that Jay is lying again about his story. This evidence changed that whole case and makes Jay seem less reliable to the cops and the state. If Adnan had discovered this valuable information earlier it would have given him the alibi he
An acquaintance of his, Jay Wilds, happened to know the step by step plan of murder Adnan allegedly used against Hae. Many details of Jays story went unproven and yet Adnan Syed was sentenced to life in prison. Jay Knew all the specific details of Haes murder. Jay tried so hard to get rid of any evidence that could link him to the crime. He did not go the cops after receiving the information that Hae had died.
He cared about her well-being and he tried to make sure she was okay after she didn’t pick up her cousin from school as she always does. Adnan cared for her even though they broke
Lastly, a testimony from Asia McClain claims that she spoke to Adnan at the library 2:15 on January 13th. There might be a few reasons to hint to his guilt, but the evidence of his innocence outshines that greatly. First
The Serial podcast captivated millions of listeners as it dug deep into the case of Adnan Syed, a man convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. While Syed's sentence to life in prison may initially seem justified, a closer examination of the evidence presented in the podcast raises significant doubts about his guilt. This essay aims to challenge Adnan Syed's sentence by presenting material from three episodes of Serial, revealing inconsistencies in the prosecution's case, unreliable witness testimonies, and the lack of conclusive evidence tying Syed to the crime. Throughout the podcast, several inconsistencies and discrepancies emerge, undermining the reliability of the prosecution's case against Adnan Syed.
Adnan didn't have the personality of someone who would do this. Time and time again, people have said he doesn’t seem to be obsessed with Hae, or that he is a good kid, etc. When the number of people saying Adnan would never do this is so high, and Jay Wild's statements are the only ones saying he would, it becomes suspicious in my opinion. While I believe Adnan's personality is one of the main proofs of his innocence, there is still a way that he would have committed this crime. First, many of the quotes are from people who used to be close to him.
Adnan’s friend Asia sent him a letter while he was in prison saying that she saw him on the 13th of January during the 21 Minutes that were stated to have been the time that he had killed Hae Min Lee. She states that she saw him in the library near the school. She states that she was talking to Adnan and her boyfriend came up to them and started arguing with her thinking that Adnan was hitting on her. After Adnan leaves she states that the time was after 21 minutes that the state put the time of the murder at. This means that Adnan could not have killed Hae in the time that was stated that he killed her.
One piece of evidence that proves that Adnan is innocent and that did not kill Hae Lee is Jay's inconsistencies in his stories and interviews when talking to the police. When Jay is being interviewed by the police he tells in chronological order what happened and what he remembers from that night when Hae Lee was murdered. Evertime Jay told his story a small detail or location would change and not match up with the original story. In Episode 4: Inconsistencies Jay is being interviewed by the police, they had asked “why would you lie about the location? ”. Jay responded with, “Because I’m
Today the audience will be presented with the 1999 case of the cold blooded murder of Hae Min Lee, an 18 year old senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, Maryland, and the conviction of her ex boyfriend, Adnan Syed in a podcast brought to them by Sarah Koenig, an American journalist and radio host, on The American Life where Serial is presented. During this case you will see various different sides of the story that claim whether or not Adnan committed the crime or if the killer is still on the loose. This case is particularly tricky given that most of the evidence is mainly based off of partially unreliable witnesses, little to none physical evidence, and the memories of now 36 year old Adnan and the very few people he had talked to
In a transcript by PBS it states “This is where Asia McClain, the classmate of Adnan and Hae, said that she saw him here. And she wrote two letters after his arrest saying, ‘I know I saw you here. I can't believe that you did this because I saw you during that day.’” The exclusion of Asia’s claims in the trial was also brought up during Serial S1 E1. This shows that Gutierrez was untrustworthy and if she were not Adnan's lawyer the case might have ended with a different

The defendant had once challenged Sarah Koenig, the creator and narrator of the podcast “Serial” to test the timeline of our case claiming that timeline can’t possibly fit the events mentioned in the given time frame. So, Ms.Koenig along with the podcast producer Dana Chivvis test the idea by setting up a mock scenario as the state had claimed. After going through the test, the two had concluded that the time frame provided made it possible for Mr.Syed to kill Ms.Lee(Ep.5). This evidence is definitely reliable since the narrator and producer are creating the podcast, and have been investigating both sides of the murder. The scenario confirms that the defendant could have killed Ms.Lee in the amount of time our case claims.
These people say that since Hae broke up with Adnan and that was enough reason to want her dead. However, Adnan was a smart kid who would realize that killing someone for breaking up with you is not a valid reason. Adnan was not hurt enough to kill Hae; he was devastated when she died and he didn't know about it when he was told. Also, they say that Adnan had enough time to kill Hae. What this opinion fails to take into account is that Asia saw Adnan at the library around the same time of the murder and she was never used in court as an alibi (Koenig, “The Best Defense is a Good Defense”).
Anya Schultz, the author of a review titled Serial: A Captivating New Podcast, works to show how multiple narratives and stories can be manipulated and sometimes vastly misinterpreted. Serial, an intriguing, enthralling podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig, tells the story of Hae Min Lee, a young, beautiful, high school senior who was murdered in 1999. Lee 's case, as Koenig and Schultz point out, has a few missing pieces of information that were never accounted for. For example, how did the jury come to the conclusion that Lee 's ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was truly guilty? Why did Syed 's lawyer forget to mention the letter from his acquaintance Asia McClain that could have polished his alibi?
An evidence that makes Adnan guilty is when the State “contended that Hae was killed between 2:15 and 2:36 parking lot, about a mile from Woodlawn High School” (Chen 16). Basically, Adnan and Hae were together during that time frame where Adnan strangled her at the Best Buy parking lot. Adnan told Jay to come pick him up afterwards. This aligns perfectly with Jay’s story because he told the detectives that Adnan had killed Hae at the Best Buy parking lot. Thus, making Adnan the prime suspect since he was last seen with Hae.
This proves that Adnan was the one who killed her. Jay and Adnan both committed a serious crime. Adnan killed Hae with the help from
