What would Cookie Monster be if he didn’t have a cookie? That’s right, a boring, old veggie lover. This is what happens when life gives you a cookie, but you find a way to turn it into a carrot. In the same way, why would someone think of taking a backpack away from a High School student? For 10 years, South Western students haven’t been allowed to carry their backpacks throughout the school day because they have been deemed as tripping hazards. Although backpacks have been banned for use during the day at South Western High School, backpacks are a necessary learning tool, because they save everyone time, promote student health, and pose little (if any) safety risks. First, allowing students to carry backpacks throughout the school day would save everyone time. Since backpacks have multiple compartments, they allow students to carry learning materials like textbooks, calculators, binders, and writing utensils. Students can use backpacks to transport laptops inside dedicated sleeves. As a result, students would waste less time at their lockers searching through the debris for assignments and missing homework. Teachers, too, will welcome backpacks when they no longer …show more content…
Today’s modern backpacks are designed to take up very little room in the designated areas that the teacher/administrators assign like hooks on the walls, cubbies, designated floor area, or back of chairs. In addition, backpacks definitely do not increase the contraband of the weapons and/or drugs in our school. Some kids could carry contraband in the purses, gym bags, laptop cases, etc. that we already carry around throughout the school day. Therefore, backpacks make our school no less safe than it already is. To increase safety awareness, the Mrs. Berryman could require students to sign a backpack contract in which we agree not to do anything mischievous or hurtful to South Western students that shouldn’t be
On Friday July 29,2016, at approximately 2:30 pm, Security Counselor Patrick Johnson of the inspire Nola Charter School Association Security Department, currently assigned to Edna Karr High School , Located at 3332 Huntlee Dr, in new Orleans Louisiana, 70131,had an occasion to investigate the misplacement of a laptop cart containing multiple laptops. S/C Johnson offers the following report. On Friday July 29,2016 at approximately 12:00pm Mr. Chris Reed a teacher at Edna Karr High school discovered a cart containing multiple laptops next to the trash dumpster. Mr. Reed brought the cart back into the school and reported his findings to head of school Harold Clay.
Instead of punishing him for his decision, I questioned his thought process of why he had brought the to school. By confronting Travis in a private setting, I was able to find the origin of the problem so that a proper solution could be enforced. Similar to Weiner’s stories about Sonya and Danny, the teachers in the situations chose to find the reason why rules were broken instead on instantly punishing the students. Weiner explains that “When we see our students as human beings like ourselves rather than as ‘the other,’ we can separate the person from the act and intervene appropriately” (Weiner/Jerome 89). By allowing ourselves, as teachers, to step away as the authoritative figure, we can make a better connection with
At Apollo Career Center, there are a lot of people who bring stuff like chew, dip, and vape pens into class. Even though they know that they are not supposed to do it, they still do and get suspended for it. They are wasting their time and money by coming to school and then getting suspended. They are also wasting the teachers’ time by pulling them away from teaching so that they can deal with the chewers, dippers, and vapers. If the school had a person at the entrance to the building to search their bags and pockets for those items, it would save time and money.
Saltillo High School no longer assigns lockers to students, but it should. Students will often have multiple books and binders to carry home every day in their bags resulting in a sore back and shoulders from the strain of the heavy backpack. The lockers are already in place, so allowing the students to use them would not cost the school any money. There really is no reason why the students should not be able to have access to them.
The teacher discovered that the student was not eating while she was away from school. So, she gathered all of her “school snacks”, (food items that she ate while at school, microwavable macaroni and cheese, pasta bowls, etc.) and presented them to the student to eat during the school’s winter break. This incident made the staff “check on” other students that were suspected with having food-insecurity. Supplying students with basic needs such as: food items, addresses other unwarranted behaviors. When students are given the basic resources that they need to perform, there will be a better desired outcome.
Even though some people may disagree, random locker searches should be an issue that is enforced. Parents do not want their children in danger to due to some adolescents. Drugs and guns could be secluded and then there could be a prodigious chance of somebody getting hurt. Having drugs at school is restricted and dangerous. It is dangerous because somebody could use some, go crazy, and hurt people.
Also, guns could accidentally go off if it is in the student backpack and it dropped and could hurt someone. According to Admiral William H. McRaven a Texas Chancellor, “We survivors do not think that it is a good idea to have guns on campus. There is no evidence that a bill like SB 11 would do anything to stop a mass shooting, but SB 11 would make the average day on campus more dangerous in an environment where students are dealing with failing grades, alcohol abuse, relationship problems” (McRaven). People should think about the future on how many people lives are taken because of guns on campus and should decrease the
Should teachers be allowed to carry? Carson A. Lovin Devils Lake High School Shootings across america are not a new thing to us, in fact they have been going on for quite some time now. “The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more guns.” (https://gun-control.procon.org/) Whether it be school shootings, mall shootings, or even shootings in a church, we know that it is going to happen again and it has in the passed.
Should teachers be allowed to possess guns during school hours? Teachers should be able to possess guns during school hours because the teacher could protect the students, be able to prevent school shootings, and neutralize other threats. ¨Adam could not handle his constant bullying anymore, he felt as if he would do anything to end his struggle. Adam dug into his backpack and felt the handle of the gun he took from his father's drawer that morning.
When the textbooks weight can exceed 15 pounds, we just cannot carry them. Female students are allowed to carry purses, this is not fair to male students who have no way to carry their supplies. • The bathrooms at Georgetown High are extremely unsanitary, causing some student to choose not to use them. This can leave students with health problems. •
For many years, schools around the nation have focused on sports instead of their academic studies. Many studies show that these activities are harming places of learning. Therefore, districts around the country should stop this after class past time to save money, reduce the child’s stress, and to increase the learners grades As many Americans know, money can help to achieve a great education. In an article “Should Your School Get Rid of Sports”, it was found that “many schools can not afford to repair classrooms due to the lack of funding”(Ripley 10).The biggest events the schools have to pay for are the games, they have to pay for the concession stands, to clean up after the kids who leave their trash and they have to repair the bleachers
Schools should have better security in order to ensure students' and personnel's safety, there has been a huge rise in gun violence at schools and we can stop the sale or use of illegal substances on school grounds. Subsequently, schools since 1999 have had
Schools having random locker searches is unreasonably and unfair to the students! Schools shouldn’t do locker searches because they could be implying that students are untrustworthy, but not only are they indicating that, locker searches may make the students have lack of trust. If you search their locker randomly and they have personal matters such as photos or letters that they hide in there and you look at it, they would feel less comfortable and not trust you. It would make the student be distant and won't have a bond with their teacher, administrator and/or peers. Students’ lack of trust can also create other issues.
Studies show that overweight students tend to have more problems with learning and paying attention (Miura). Many parents also fear that children would have the chance to skip school of get into drugs and alcohol while they are loose for their lunch break. People of the communities have also expressed their fears of increased traffic and increased risk of traffic collisions (?9 Primary Pros and Cons of Open Campus Lunch?). Not only can open lunches cause health problems, but they can lead to other dangers such as a car crash or
This is an emergency! The popularity of phones has been debated on if they should be permitted to be carried at school. Students should be allowed to carry phones in school because of safety reasons, a useful tool, and an emergency. The first reason why phones should be allowed to be carried is for emergency purposes.
