What would Cookie Monster be if he didn’t have a cookie? That’s right, a boring, old veggie lover. This is what happens when life gives you a cookie, but you find a way to turn it into a carrot. In the same way, why would someone think of taking a backpack away from a High School student? For 10 years, South Western students haven’t been allowed to carry their backpacks throughout the school day because they have been deemed as tripping hazards. Although backpacks have been banned for use during the day at South Western High School, backpacks are a necessary learning tool, because they save everyone time, promote student health, and pose little (if any) safety risks. First, allowing students to carry backpacks throughout the school day would save everyone time. Since backpacks have multiple compartments, they allow students to carry learning materials like textbooks, calculators, binders, and writing utensils. Students can use backpacks to transport laptops inside dedicated sleeves. As a result, students would waste less time at their lockers searching through the debris for assignments and missing homework. Today’s modern backpacks are designed to take up very little room in the designated areas that the teacher/administrators assign like hooks on the walls, cubbies, designated floor area, or back of chairs. In addition, backpacks definitely do not increase the contraband of the weapons and/or drugs in our school. Some kids could carry contraband in the purses, gym bags, laptop cases, etc. that we already carry around throughout the school day. Therefore, backpacks make our school no less safe than it already is. To increase safety awareness, the Mrs. Berryman could require students to sign a backpack contract in which we agree not to do anything mischievous or hurtful to South Western students that shouldn’t be
