College Varsity Athletes Should be Paid In this paper, I argue that college varsity athletes should be paid for playing sports that bring in revenue. In particular, College football and basketball because they bring in the majority of the revenue for the schools. The revenue accomplished by college sports programs continues to increase, due to the growth in interest of the NCAA basketball tournament and the college football playoffs (Berry III, Page 270). Throughout the past few years, one of the main topics debated in college sports is whether or not the athletes should be paid.

Many people say they shouldn’t, and many think they should but I’m going to use objective evidence to see which side is right. The average salary for a college athlete is around $64,000, and the average salary for a regular professional athlete is around $37,000 a year, people like Lebron James and other famous individuals have said many different opinions on the case like saying “college athletes are workers.” A recent study showed that a survey of 2,501 college students voted if college athletes should be paid or not and the majority of the students are in favor of college athletes getting paid, this brings up the question of yes they should be paid, but how much?
Should college athletes be paid, or should they just be happy with the scholarship they are given? In the article “Why College Athletes Should Be Paid”, the author Tyson Hartnett claims that college athletes deserve to be paid. In the article, he states, “A $25,000 scholarship may seem like a lot of money, but it really only covers the basics” (Hartnett par. 5). Hartnett feels that college athletes deserve a salary because they are “typically dead broke” (Hartnett par. 9), even though they bring lots of attention and money to their schools.

This research paper described why college athletes should be paid. They make personal sacrifices, and take risks in order to produce revenue for their schools.
College athletes staying pure to the game College athletes should not be paid to play, they should not be paid to play because it is something that they have to work for and in a way it would replace scholarships. College athletes already receive scholarships and they are meant to help them with their schooling and education, not to play sports. College athletes are also students and most of them will already receive scholarship from the college. The scholarship alone should be plenty of enough money for a student, to be paid more on top of that would just be ridiculous and unreasonable. For many young athlete, going to college to play the game you love is a once and a lifetime opportunity and privilege.
One reason high schoolers should be paid for name, image, and likeness contracts is that they can pay for expenses that normal athletes can't afford. Most athletes will not make it very far into a professional league, but the money they can earn from NIL contracts could help them a lot. A lot of these athletes won’t be able to make it into a professional league and wouldn’t mind “a full or partial scholarship that covers tuition and education expenses” as a way to pay for these activities (Should College Athletes Be Paid? Reasons Why or Why Not). This means that even though most of these athletes will make it far enough into a professional league, the money will help them with paying for school and other expenses.
Athletes are responsible for most of any school’s income as far as athletic and ticket sales go. The average Division 1 student-athlete spends approximately 34 hours a week on athletically related activities. This number increases to 39+ hours when talking about Division 1 football players (David Ridpath, 2016).
