In American society men are suppose to be the stronger, more physical beings. There are those two guys through school, the jocks and the nerds. In Jock Culture, longtime sportswriter Robert Lipsyte personal analyzes the effect jock culture has on our society. He argues all the things wrong with having jock culture, and what impacts are left because of it.
Society tends to ignore the struggle of masculine norms men face everyday. In the film, “The Mask You Live In”, various ages of men discuss what it is like to live in a society filled with sexism and masculine norms. In the film, it is shown the impact of these norms society puts forth for men is catastrophic and negatively impacts their mental health. A few masculine norms that are found within the film are, self-reliance, violence, power over women, winning and risk-taking. Self-reliance is a big topic to cover in regards to masculine norms.
With the advancements in things people are able to improves their health goals to living a longer a better life, however, there is still the issues of how social class can affect their status for them to participate in a sport of any kind. When reading “In the Paradox of Social Class and Sports Involvement” written by Thomas C. Wilson, it first introduces of a paradox that people in a higher social class will be greater when being involved in some sort of sport if played with only the higher class, but if the sport is involved with the lower class, the higher class will less likely be involved with that certain sport. This was proven by Wilson has given example of the higher ones would usually play tennis or golf and will less likely play football
“You can’t play with us you’re a GIRL.” Heard that before. People say that boys and girls shouldn’t play the same sports, or coed sorts. I completely disagree with that because, it could really put people down. It never feels good to be discriminated, and that is basically what people do when it comes to the non- coed sports group.

As I kicked off my research on the National Football League (NFL), I intended to report on these injuries. According to Encyclopedia of Psychology, sexual abuse is unwanted sexual activity with perpetrators using force, making threats or taking advantage of victims who are not able to give consent. Most of victims and perpetrators know each other. In sport, women athletes are more frequent victims of harassment and abuse than men athletes. Many women athletes drop out of sport rather than continue being subjected to the constant harassment and abuse.

Football forces you to pursue and aspire to the social and cultural definition of what a man who plays football should be. The masculinity of football seeps in the individual’s lifestyle where they tend to act in a way that represents a sense of toughness, dominance, and a source of high achievement due to the social expectations that come with playing football. While in high school, I became a very masculine individual due to the environment that I surrounded myself in, which made me the person I am. This is an active practice that is constantly occurring through the approaches to life and the things I get involved with and not involved with. After writing this essay, it help me better understand how masculinity affects me in countless different ways from the way I dress to the way I walk.
The social theories that I have chosen to focus on are Conflict Theory and Feminist Theory. I have decided to study these concepts as they share both similar and contradictory ideas of sport participation and power in sport. I will also explore the topic of disability and sport in an attempt to illustrate the great need for integration of athletes with disabilities into mainstream clubs and teams. Finally, I will investigate the area of sexuality and sport, a subject which I believe has remained very much concealed until recent times. Conflict theory states that “social order is based on economic interests and the use of economic power to exploit labour”.
Although over time gender discrimination has grown progressively over the years, one place that gender inequality is not fully present is in the sports world. Gender inequality in sports has been an issue in the industry for centuries. For years and years women faced the issues of lower pay, not as much publicity and not being appreciated as a female athlete. Clearly, even in this prevalent era of alleged equality and impartiality, most sports still remains as a male dominion, as there still is an unnoticed barrier between sport and woman. Through this analysis, I wanted to investigate some of the initial causes for the above circumstances.
Sport for years has brought people together all around the world. Sport has the potential to unite people. The UN definition of sport is all forms of physical activity that contribute to physical fitness, mental well-being and social interaction, such as play, recreation, organized or competitive sport and indigenous sports and games. The Oxford English dictionary definition of sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. This shows us how sport is not just for competition, it is for fun and entertainment.
“Female discrimination in sports is a common occurrence all around the world, women are seen as less than males.” (Ladrea) Equality in sports is unequal. In the 1800 women got very little attention and did not get the opportunity to play in any sport in America and all around the world. Men could go and try out for different sports teams and workout but for women they were only allowed to stay home to cook and clean. There were some events women could participate in but it could not be competitive, it was focused on getting active and staying active.
Should men and women compete against each other in sport? In today’s modern society it is accepted that gender equality is aspired to in all areas of life. It is agreed that women should be paid the same wage as men, given the same job opportunities and have the same laws applied to them.
“You hit like a girl”. This statement connotates women being the weaker sex which summarizes what gender discrimination in sports is. Dictionary-wise, it is the discrimination of one’s athletic abilities based on their gender. It is seen in every sport at any country around the world. Both men and women are victims of this but research proves that when are those who are mostly affected.
