A social problem is a situation whereby there are conditions, events or groups of people contributing to troublesome situations that need to be changed or ameliorated (Gusfield, n.d). As an instance, if people in a certain community are living poor conditions in which they cannot afford their basic needs, poverty has to be looked at in a social problem angle. From looking at social problems, solutions and measures of prevention are taken to ensure the resolution.
Injustice
From the information presented in the scenario, there is injustice which results from skin based discrimination. For racial discrimination, one of three individual black people aged between 18 and 30 is in jail. In addition to that, 34% of black people in Alabama state have lost their right to vote (Bryan, 2012). However, this does not mean that black Americans commit many crimes than their fellow white. The point of view presented in the video is that this should not continue existing anymore because Americans should have the identity. According to Bryan 2012, people should not be killed for crimes they have done, but crimes should be the ones eliminated. Mistreating people because they are black is losing American identity, which is the Americans’ capacity of every person to contribute to a community, to a perspective that is hopeful. On the other side, if black people were not controlled, there would be more crimes in the United States, which is a reason why they should be taken
I learned that Mexican-Americans were discriminated against more than I was aware of during this time in our history. An example from the video showed a sign outside of a restaurant that said “We serve whites only – No Spanish or Mexicans.” I also learned that the Hernandez v. Texas was the first Mexican-American civil rights case involving Mexican-American lawyers to reach the U.S Supreme Court. (PBS) o What does the video tell you about civil rights in America – for example, 1) how have our views of civil rights changed?
Market and social justice principles make it difficult for health care delivery to be distributed equally among the nation. Social problems are issues that also increase the difficulty for health care delivery to be effective, such as poverty or homelessness. There are also set backs that occur do to economical issues the nation is having. A recent issue was the recession in the late 2000 's that caused many Americans
The film 13th is a documentary that explains how the prison systems are another form of slavery and is built to effect colored individuals and colored communities. The film identifies and explained a loop hole in the 13th amendment, which banned slavery. The loop in the amendment is that slavery and involuntary servitude is illegal unless a person is convicted of a crime. This clause in the amendment led to the first prison boom in America and mass incarceration. This film opened my eyes to underlying aspects of things that I have had previous knowledge about.
In every country, criminals are punished differently such that some are sentenced to prison, others the public becomes the judge and the jury while for the case of the United States we usually have a trial to prove that they are not guilty and if they are indeed guilty then they will be just sentenced them to jail. In the article “How to Dismantle the “New Jim Crow”? it states how the number of inmates have increased since the late 1960’s. In some cases, the prisons are filled with minority race within the community for example; the African American, Latinos, and many more that’s why they call it the new Jim Crow. With this kind of treatment of the minority, some people have different reasons as to why the minority race is the one that is mostly
In this world today, there are many cases of police brutality going on right now. For some cases, police shouldn’t have acted the way that they did. There are multiple reasons for why police brutality occur and must be removed for it to occur less. Police brutality happens to all races, but the main race is African American people.
But one problem that African Americans still face is the unfairness of the American prison and criminal justice system. The United States holds the title as the highest prisoner population in the world. With African Americans account for less than 12% of the United States, they still make up a large portion of the U.S prison population. Black people are incarcerated at higher rates than whites, despite being equally susceptible to committing crimes as whites. The American prison and criminal justice system has a long history of racial discrimination towards African Americans which can be supported through examples of unjust laws, disproportionate incarceration rates among different races, the and cases of African Americans being unfairly persecuted for crimes they didn’t commit.
“African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population.” The majority group of this statistic are people who come from african american backgrounds. The fact that black people are to make up nearly half of the prison population alone, really conveys the rate at which they are being arrested. Black men are often victims of racial profiling by police. They are targeted by police officers, and security guards, and are accused of crimes unrelated to them, simply on the basis of their skin color.
A social problem is an aspect of life that people are concerned about and would like to change. It consists of two components: the objective requirement that an aspect of society can be measured. . The objective condition in the case of abortion entails the question whether abortions are legal, who obtains an abortion, and under what circumstances is an abortion secured (Henslin, 2008). The second component is the subjective condition; This is the concern that a significant number of people have regarding the objective condition. In the case of abortion, the personal condition involves distress that a pregnant woman must carry the unwanted baby to full term (Henslin, 2008).
The police brutality of African Americans has shaped American history from the civil movements of the 20th century to the power movements of today’s society. The injustices of blacks reached a peak in the 1900s as a fight for equality and civil rights fueled deeper. Blacks were free from slavery but still weren’t seen as equals in American culture. The law is intended to protect it citizens but in that time blacks had no favor with the law and police. The same issues of inequality before the law and social acceptance have ignited a the modern day push for rights and fair treatment.
White vs. Native Americans Knowing the fact that Native Americans were pushed toward the Middle West and had to settle down against their wills are depressing. When the first Europeans came to this remote land and decided to make it their home, I was not sure whether they could imagine that the whole land is dominated by “invaders” called by the Native Americans, including the native Hawaii. “From a Native Daughter” by Haunani-Kay Trask showed us how these Natives’ feelings are being overlooked and silenced by white historians who do not know their language and culture. The author questioned Western historians were “looking at them with Western eyes, thinking about them within Western philosophical contexts, categorizing them by Western indices,
American people should be protected by the legal system of America, however these laws fail all citizens, whether they are black, white or any other
According to the article Racism and Police Brutality in America, “Whites believe that Blacks are disproportionately inclined to engage in criminal behavior and are the deserving on harsh treatment by the criminal justice system” (Chaney 484). The justice system has unfortunately followed this idea. The African American race has been a minority in the legal system in the past; however, it has been much worse as of 2015. Some individuals assume it is acceptable to refrain from acknowledging this fact. Racism is an issue in the midst of police brutality, and it should be resolved.
Many social problems existed back then. A social issue refers to an issue that influences and is opposed by a considerable number of individuals within a society. It is often created by others and is something out of an individual's. Shakespeare use his play The Tempest to comment on social issues that were present in his time. Shakespeare does so by implementing these problems into the play.
