The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund wrote in 1971, the Supreme Court delivered a common ruling in The Griggs v. Duke power Co, which will have transformed the nation’s work place. The Supreme Court embraced a powerful legal tool known as The “disparate impact” outline. In Griggs, LDF represented a group of thirteen African-American employees employed by the Duke Power Company’s Dan River Steam Station. It is a power-generating facility which was in Draper, North Carolina. This company had an extensive history of segregating people by race.
Economics is concentrated around the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth in a certain country. Within America alone, economics is a widely debated topic as well as a substantial matter in political debate. Trickle down economics gained popularity in the United States in the 1980s during the Reagan Administration, it is essentially an economic principle that advocates reducing tax on the wealthy as a means to encourage business investment in the short term. In Chaos or Community, author, Holly Sklar explores the wealth and poverty rates, not only in America, but also globally. Although it is notable that this article is not as formal as most, it still holds a considerable amount of factual information as well as providing the interested audience with cartoons and quantitative tables.
In David Masci article we are introduced to the theory of how racial discrimination is alive in the workforce. The article begins with a specific example, an African American women who has worked hard to advance in her employment but is held back simply because of the color of her skin. Masci’s claims and arguments are supported thoroughly with actual statistics and examples from modern society. Through his use of pathos, logos, and ethos Masci is able to structure a feeling of action, in order to recognize differences among black employees, and the amount of extra work is needed from them to advance to a position that is still held my limitations of white supremacy in America. “Discrimination still exist even if it is masked well” (7), Masci leaves no confusion to his readers it is clear and problematic that issues that black people face in the workplace are hidden to not be recognized but instead restricted by higher power and who can take those positions.
So it is hard to speak out about a lot of our discomfort, because we may feel it is wrong or no one will believe us. While some may believe we, as women, are striving for equality among men, it is a completely different topic in regards to a job versus sexual harassment. The article expresses the abuse among women of color in low income jobs, who may not speak out for fear of losing their jobs. But these women may have children at home taking care of, or may be trying to complete a degree. Many are single mothers, undocumented families and are categorized as the minority group.
The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. When we hear stories of African-Americans who lost a promotion or a job offer because of their race, subconsciously we presume this could never happen to us; that if we were in their shoes things would be different. This thinking, however, is not necessarily correct. When we come to understand the pitfalls of racial bias, and learn to overcome that tendency in ourselves, we will slowly bring our nation closer to where we can coexist without fear of malicious intent. I suggest we make a stronger effort to tackle the issue of racism, and work to eliminate an unconscious bias from our personalities. All of these things considered, they will do no good without implementation.
Institutional racism is inevitable in the United States. Institutional racism is constantly occurring, whether it be in the work force, schools, or the criminal justice system. The color of one’s skin is a determining factor for his success in a company, and whether or not he ends up in the court systems, and for how long. Although laws such as the Thirteenth Amendment, Fourteenth Amendment, and Fifteenth Amendment have been put in place to avoid racism in America and give black people equal rights, institutional racism is still holding African Americans back.
Even approaching more recent times, the racial factor that denies us equality is still present. One report shows that, ‘’In 1995, average white households had $18,000 in financial wealth, while Black households possessed a total of only $200’’(‘’International Socialist Review’’) Just as we saw when talking about the gender inequality, people of certain, ‘’undesirable,’’ races can be subjected to unequal pay, due to racist, and bias bosses. Skin is only so deep, so we have to ask ourselves: Should color determine how others treat ? If so, we can then start to understand why America won’t ever be completely
A study indicates that dark-skinned African Americans face a distinct disadvantage when applying for jobs. Matthew Harrison, a doctoral student at UGA undertook the first significant study of "colorism" in the workplace. He found that a light-skinned black male can have only a bachelor's degree and typical work experience and still be preferred over a dark-skinned black male with an M.B.A. and past managerial positions, simply because expectations of the light-skinned black male are much higher, and he doesn't appear as “menacing' as the darker-skinned male applicant.” This finding is possibly due to the common belief that fair-skinned blacks probably have more similarities with whites than do dark-skinned blacks, which in turn makes whites feel more comfortable around them. Many social issues are portrayed in television shows because they are common in every society so it makes it easy to relate to the audience. One show in particular that has many social issues that are demonstrated perfectly to the audience is a Netflix original show called “Shameless.” This is a show that focuses on a single family in which the father, Frank, is a deadbeat drunk who is never reliable. The mother, Monica, abandoned the family a year or so after she had the last child, she is mentally bipolar. She shows up occasionally throughout the series, but for the most part is in some unknown place to the audience.
In Walter Mosley 's fictional short story, "Equal Opportunity" (1995), he describes employment discrimination through the character of Socrates Fortlow, an African American ex-convict attempting to find employment. Socrates lives in an abandoned building in Los Angeles neighborhood called Watts. He has been out of “prison eight years, fifty-eight years old, and ready to start life over again,” (Mosley 1). Socrates faces several conflicts, attempting to gain employment, because of his (1) age, (2) race, and (3) where he lives. He has to travel far to look for a job because everyone on his side of town, especially, Crenshaw and Washington, both store owners in Watts, knew that he collected bottles and cans for money and “they would not hire
The same is true for African American individuals in the work force. The workforce claims to give everyone a fair and equal hand, but often times African Americans are given the short end of the stick. This lack of opportunity leads me to question the structural conditions that have created cultural patterns that reinforce disadvantage. The structural issues of inequality in the workforce lead many individuals to have a stigma towards African American individuals. This stigma taint’s society’s view towards this group and allows them to make judgements on other aspects of their lives.
Racism is one of the most important social issues of the modern world. It has affected millions of people worldwide, and is one of the deepest social problems in history. Looking at the modern office there are many “glass ceilings” that Steele refers to not only apply to minorities but to genders in general. Some bosses may stop people from being promoted because they are intimidated by women and do not think they should be placed on the same level as themselves, even though they are equally qualified for the position. Steele also talks about how a misused privileged can turn out to be a disadvantage such as the concept of welfare, because people use it to their advantage so much that it become a crutch for the rest of their lives. As we reach the 21st century we would think that racial inequality has completely ended yet we continue to see much discrimination. Racial inequality continues to exist in the world and here in the United States it is a very controversial topic. Today, we watch the television and almost everyday we hear news about some type of crime or situation which regards race issues. In other words, racism is still a topic that we experience in a daily basis and continues to haunt this country. By analyzing some recent racial inequality news we can find out what continues to make this issue such a controversial topic.
