Oil has been the saviour of many and gave them something to live for. Oil was discovered in Texas in 1901 on spindletop. The thick goopy substance called petroleum made many families and individuals richer than they would have ever believed. Texas Annexed to the United States On February 19, 1846, Texas was annexed to the United States of America. After many years of never-ending negotiations, Texas was finally admitted into the Union. Despite gaining independence, Texas would continue to face several problems. Texas, at this time, did not have enough forces to defend itself, which meant that they could be vulnerable to an attack from Mexico.

After being a part of the US for __ years, Texas began to disagree with the rest of the US on many issues such as slavery and states’ rights, just to name a few. After seeing a few other states secede from the Union, the Texans got motivated to do so as well. Secede means, to officially leave a country or state.
Fight For Rights Why did Texans fight in the Civil War? This war lasted almost 4 years between the Union and the Confederacy. Many Texans thought they should take part in the war and they had a lot of reasons. Texans fought in the Civil War because they wanted to preserve slavery, support state’s rights, and because of their love for Texas. Slavery was a big part of Texas’ economy.
The way they claimed annexed was by saying the Rio Grande was the southern boundary of Texas but Mexico said it was the Nueces River. In regards to the war, Americans were greatly divided. The northerners hated it because of the fact that Texas favored slavery. Those in the south liked the idea of a war because it would help expand to the west. This expansion would provide more land and opportunity.
In 1836 Texas declared its independence.(O’Sullivan 323) The war with Mexico happened in Mexico and the US. It started in 1846.(Roden 315) To start the war, Mexicans fired on Americans. People who believed Manifest Destiny believed that it is God’s plan to expand America to the Pacific Ocean.
Europeans had many effects on the area now known as Texas and on the Indians. Few if any of those effects were positive. The Conquistadors affected the people, the land, and caused the colonization of Texas. They had many motives for their deeds, converting the Indians to Christianity, finding cities of gold, or just claiming land. A Spanish conquistador named Cabeza de Vaca crashed into the mainland near Galveston in 1528 and began exploring the area now known as Texas.
Jesús Velasco-Márquez, a modern-day Mexican professor of studies wrote an article in 2006 about the Mexican-American War. He said, “US historians refer to this event as ‘The Mexican-American War’, while in Mexico, we prefer to use the term ‘The U.S. Invasion... From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons. ’’’ (Velasco-Márquez, 12). During the time of the independence of Texas, Mexico was ruled by the dictator General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Jose Antonio Navarro was a prominent figure in the early history of texas. He was a Mexican-American statesman, politician, and revolutionary who played a significant role in the Texas Revolution and the establishment of the Republic of Texas. Navarro was a strong advocate for the rights of Tejanos, or Mexican Texans, and fought for their inclusion in the new government. He was also a successful businessman and loandowner, and his contributions to Texas history are widely recognized.
According to Steve Chapman, the Texas flag is seen as a unique, honorable symbol for Texans. Its design is one that can be distinguished from afar and is one of the elements that Texans are proud of. In addition, the flag is the only flag that can be flown at the same height as the United States flag! However, what makes the Texas flag so distinct?
Texas became it’s own republic of the state. The republic had two official national flag. In 1836, the first flag for use on land was the “National Standard of Texas”. The Congress adopted the flag and President Sam Houston approved it on December 10, 1836 (Spain, Charles). The flag displayed a single large yellow five-pointed star centered on a dark blue background.
Ever since the conquistadors had conquered Mexico, the life and culture of many modern Mexicans has been altered by Spain. From the design and organization of towns and cities to religion to class system, Spain has definitely made an impression on Mexico. One of the first imprint the Spanish made was leveling the native temples and then putting their Catholic churches and administrative buildings on top. To me, it’s as they - the Spanish are stating their religion - Catholicism - is superior to theirs. Secondly, the Spaniards used the local people as slaves to build their churches and their government buildings.
