Statement Of Purpose: Foster Care Education

In P6 of my work I am going to explain the role of supportive relationships to reduce the risk of abuse and neglect.

I did know that although children are taken out of abusive homes, that the foster care is flawed and children can be/ are emotionally abused and damaged. However, I did not know that the number one reason that children are put into foster care is poverty. It definitely makes sense, poverty is huge here in America. Teenagers get pregnant and put their children up in the foster care system, people have children and lose jobs. Social workers play a huge role in foster care and child abuse. Now the problem is can social workers solve the issue of children being mentally damaged and abused in foster care. Social workers do sit down and try to take a child from a dysfunctional environment and put them into (what is supposed to be a structured) environment, but does this work for every child? Clearly not because of how many foster care children are getting pregnant, running away from their foster parent, getting arrested. It just is not working. I am employed as an on-going social worker by the MA Department of Children and Families (DCF). DCF is a child protection agency, which is responsible for protecting children from abuse and neglect and strengthening families. The Department has offices throughout the Commonwealth; I am located at the New Bedford area office. As an on-going social worker I am assigned families after a report of abuse or neglect has been reported, investigated and supported. It is the on-going social worker’s responsibility to provide professional child welfare social work services, through home visits, to the family. I believe that foster care system should be changed for the better of the child only because i know that most kids started off with a bad life and to top it off they have to be in a foster home and most disagreeable kids can just go to a juvenile detention center if not adopted.But really not a lot of things should change like when they do background checks it is most likely very necessary because you don 't want to put a miserable kid with it 's like fighting fire with fire it 's not good for either of them.

The first step in creating family reunification is forming case plan goals, objections, and court orders. Step 2, Progression of visits. As time passes and the child remain in foster care, visits between the child and birth parents will steadily increase in frequency and moderation. It's not uncommon for visits to move from supervised, weekly visits to monitored, weekly visits to unsupervised, weekly visits. Then they will progress from overnights and weekends to several days in a row. The visits are often increased as birth parents complete court orders, and have shown to be appropriate during previous supervised and monitored visits. Step 3, Court review of case plan goals. Court dates give the judge a chance to review the completion of court orders and read reports from the social workers, and foster parents on how the case is progressing and how the parents and children are handling the different transitions.

On November 18, 1999, the House of Representatives passed the H.R.3443, which is The Foster Care Act of 1999. This was signed into law by former President, Bill Clinton. The Foster Care Act of 1999 (P.L. 106-169) is there to help the many young adults who age out of the foster care system and have nowhere to go and no family to rely on (Social Security, 2015). With so many young adults aging out of the foster care system, there has to be a solution as to what they do next.

As a Human Service major what better way to learn more about the profession than from someone who has experience in the field. I chose to interview a friend of mine, Florence Martus. They teach the kids that education is very important if you want to be successful in life and work hard to earn a diploma. We motivate the children to be humble and be themselves, but most importantly have faith of what you want to do in life. The point of this article is good high skill learning students who want to be at their very best to be something in life and reach your goals throughout life. The foster parents teaches the children that in order to make it in life, is to work hard of whatever you are striving for your goals and be on track with your school work. Society habitually limited their expectations to close to none in distinction for a child of the system for the widely held belief that these children appear distressed and useless. In some households, the foster kids turn out to be victims of abuse or forced to go to group homes. To be loved, to be praised, to be cherished; three things that every child in the world wishes for. It is a parent's job to grant their children with these needs. However, some children are not as lucky as others and are not blessed with the caring parents that they deserve. Luckily, the foster care system is there to help. Analysis of the data drew together the data and comparisons were made of similar themes and were examined as to how they related to the variables within the participant groups (Scannapieco et al., 2007, pg 427).” The three major themes that emerged as a result of this study are youth focused practice, collaboration and better communication and unmet needs and permanent connections. In the first theme, youth focused practice; foster youth participating in the focus groups stated that they wanted to be more involved in the decision making of their lives. Youth felt that their case plans were developed by the case workers with no input prior to the case workers meeting the youth. Therefore youth felt that their case plan was not individualized. The second theme collaboration and better communication consisted of the challenges that caseworkers faced when attempting to communicate with the youth’s support team included, social workers and foster parents. From the results lack of communication with the youth’s support team was prevalent in most of the youth in foster care. In addition to the lack of communication, foster youth expressed since they have been in foster care, numerous caseworkers have been in their lives, which also could have an impact on the accuracy of knowledge of supports in services for the youth aging out in foster care

I am applying for a place to study social work because I have always wanted to be able to make a difference to people's lives. With social work I believe I can do this in a caring and supportive way. Many of my life experiences have led me to who I am today. The first thing I remember that caught my attention was how my cousin would always stay with my family.
