The movie “Freedom Writers” presents itself as a movie that challenges stereotypes and stigmas against students who come from stigmatized backgrounds. While the film addresses some problematic assumptions, it also exacerbates other stereotypes and misconceptions. The film “Freedom Writers” begins with the intention to disprove the idea that students from certain ethnic and racial backgrounds are “unteachable,” but the narrative of the movie contains many errors in the depiction of the students and the portrayal of the teacher.

It shows the disadvantages that many students face in public schools, such as being placed in lower level classes where the students are considered notoriously rude and ignorant by the school administrators. The movie works to disprove the idea of the students being lazy by showing the hard work they put into their notebook and the passion they show when Miss Gruwell teaches them with an attitude that shows she believes they are just as capable of any other students. “Freedom Writers” addresses the problem of the structure of the education system, showing the viewers how the system makes it more likely for certain students to be left behind or left out of academic success. The movie “Freedom Writers” contains fatal flaws in its portrayal of the characters. The content is riddles with racist and classist connotations that reduce the efficacy of the movie’s attempt to seem like a progressive film. “Get Out” is a spin chilling story yet with a touch of comedy, illustrating what it means to be black in America, to summarize, a black photographer called Chris goes on a trip with Rose, his white girlfriend to visit her parents. Worried that Rose’s parents might be racist, he later discovers that the family has several black “servants” who behave oddly, as if they are controlled. He is later unsettled by the visitors at the party who made racially-charged and gauche comments, chuckling over Chris’s built body and announcing, “Black is in fashion!” Chris later realized the chill that he had sensed was right on the mark. The Armitage family turn out not just to be racist, but to be abusing as well as profiting from abducting blacks.
Bulman is based on why Hollywood films represent students and education in constant way that can be predicted by the actors/plot social class based on American culture. The difference among urban, suburban, and private school genres are separated and compared to find their consistencies in films. Bulman uses Durkheim’s theory of individualism (utilitarian and expressive) to indicate how individuals are dependent on one another and although it is a product of social life, it can restrict some from recognizing their connection to the social life. Leaving last week’s class, my mind was darting in all sorts of directions. While the “Eyes on the Prize” excerpt gave me a concrete understanding of the historic events of the desegregation of Little Rock High School, “Little Rock Central High: 50 Years Later” brought up all sorts of observations and questions on race in America that I hadn’t necessarily thought to address before. I think these two films were particularly interesting to view back to back because of their difference in style, content, and execution. During the 1920s, the Chicano movement faced many political challenges. One of the many problems was many teachers didn 't put in effort to teach Chicanos. In addition, schools had student’s graduate high schools without even being ready for college. One example of the political challenges the Chicano movement suffers is discussed in the History of a Barrio by Richard Romo the author asserts; “the Los Angeles School District maintained separate schools for Mexicans on the premise that Mexicans had special needs” [Romo 139]. In other words, this demonstrates that school districts separated Chicanos from normal classes because they had trouble learning.
In the Freedom Writers Diary, the authors focus on the topic of the reality of what they have to deal with in their everyday world. Their teacher Mrs. Gruwell inspired them throughout their high school years by teaching them that it is possible for each and every one of them to change. They write with an uplifting and hopeful outlook on the world even if it not realistic in their present circumstances. In their writing, they establish an effective use of pathos by writing about their own lives and how they connect to others and us by using the selection of detail, metaphors, and allusions. Through these devices, we come to the idea that even though teenager’s in today’s world are faced with many hardships, they do not have to succumb to them.

The movie, Freedom Writers did a very good job displaying the poor education system that was changing the lives of students already barely surviving in the violence and gangs. The use of the comparison of visuals what something the producers seemed to commonly use. The comparison of good to poor school materials was agonizing to see, especially with a up-close shot to Mrs. Gruwell trying to keep a smile on her face. Children are the future of our world, but many still will disown kids that aren 't the same ethnic background. Realizing this was essential, and luckily Erin Gruwell was able to do it and ultimately save her kids lives.
INTRODUCTION For the purpose of this assignment I have selected the film Freedom Writers (2007). As a teacher in a post-primary DEIS school, this film was of particular interest to me for its high-school setting and the disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds of the students. Freedom Writers is a movie adaptation of Erin Gruwell’s non-fiction book Freedom Writers Diary: How a teacher and 150 teens used writing to change themselves and the world around them (1999). The film follows Erin Gruwell, a newly qualified and enthusiastic English teacher, as she navigates her way through school politics, prejudice, racism and personal circumstance to help a group of at-risk teens to fulfill their potential.
