During the mid to late 1960’s there were many riots which lead the police to the unjust arrest and shootings of African Americans. Which "result[ed] in hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and the destruction of predominantly black neighborhoods" (Police Brutality). Racial profiling has become a “hot topic” for researchers as well as for politicians and by now it is likely that most citizens are at least aware of the common accusations of racial bias pitted against law enforcement (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Communities of color are being discriminated against and racially profiled by white police officers for any suspicion of criminal activities. It has been widely assumed by policy makers and citizens alike that allegations of racial profiling are mostly associated with the policing practices of white officers and their treatment of racial and ethnic minorities (Cochran & Warren, 2013). “A well established body of research documents the treatment of racial minorities in the criminal justice system, particularly African American men and women. One of the greatest challenges law enforcement are facing is providing effective policing for minority communities. Police Brutality is an ongoing problem and existent concern in the United States and should be resolved immediately. Law enforcement must function as an element that consists of organized and civilized officers. The presence of police brutality is becoming more of an issue as society grows. The problem posed by the illegal exercise of police power is an ongoing reality for individuals of a disfavored race, class, or sexual orientation.
