The Civil war started when the Southern states seceded by the Union. “Apprehension seem to exist among the people of the Southern States. The war still continued even though Lincoln believed there should not be any enemies against anyone in the United States. Glory for the private soldiers were different for the officers.
The Civil War was a battle of great importance to our history of the United States. On April 12th, 1861 this battle broke out between the Union States, North, and the Confederate States, such as the South. The Civil War took place all throughout the United states, and did not come to an end until the Union won the war on May 9, 1856. So, our question of “What caused the Civil War”, comes with three important answers. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were Economic, Social, and Political differences.

This battle took place in Charleston, South Carolina , during 1861 Beauregard energetically directed the strengthening of batteries around Charleston harbor aimed at Fort Sumter Conditions in the fort grew dire as the Union soldiers rushed to complete the installation of additional guns. He argued that the powerful motivating sources for soldiers to join the army were duty, honor, and patriotism (McPherson, 5). According to a book review by George Rable, he stated that its true that duty and honor were dominant values for those soldiers in the nineteenth century, however this posed a jaded view from the twentieth-century readers. McPherson stresses the importance of slavery as one of the principal ideological considerations as to why men fought.

The American Civil War was a war fought over equality. The country was split into North and the South, the union and the confederates. The war was sparked by the election of the sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln in 1860. A month after Lincoln took office the Civil War would officially start. President Lincoln wanted to get slavery out of the states.

White describes in detail the utilization of these new technologies and weapon systems, and in his words the “professional introspection” of the U.S. Military. The Civil War marked a defining moment in United States history. Long simmering sectional tensions reached a critical stage in 1860-1861 when eleven slaveholding states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. Political disagreement gave way to war in April 1861, as Confederates insisted on their right to leave the Union and the loyal states refused to allow them to go. Four years of fighting claimed almost 1.5 million casualties directly affected untold civilians, and freed four million enslaved African Americans. The social and economic system based on chattel slavery that the seceding states had sought to protect lay in ruins.
The Civil War, a cause not only for the end of slavery, but to bring back the Confederacy as well. Many thought that simply because the North had a clear advantage over the South, such as population or weaponry, the war would end quickly, people picnicked on the first battles of war, watching the battles, but they didn’t fully realize how deadly new weapons had evolved. A single shot could easily kill anyone within range. People soon found how effective technology had become, and how well the South could fight back. Throughout the earlier years of the war the Confederates won nearly all their major battles, such as the very first battle at Fort Sumter, or the following one at Bull Run.
Indians first started the Civil War in 1861, these tribes consisted of Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole. Colonel Stand of the Waite Cherokee Mounted Rifles was able to capture Union Army members in the Battle of Pea Ridge. Hundreds of Indians joined the Union. In 1862, in the Indian Territory, a brigade of all Indians was organized.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, it was the first time that Americans fought Americans. Among many reasons, the Civil War is known to be a result of the arguments over the delineation of the States’ Rights or the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln. In actuality, the Civil War, the most deadly war in American history, was due to disputes over slavery in the American territories. Therefore, the Civil War was inevitable because of the consequences that occurred one being slavery.
Although society has been brought to believe that soldiers in the Civil War, both North and South, were mere illiterate followers, not knowing what the war was about or who they what they were fighting for, James McPherson argues otherwise; contradicting popular belief. Throughout the use of primary sources, the author emphasizes the moral and ideological factors in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Inside these primary sources, the reader can look through the mind of the soldier and discover their real motives of fighting in the war through the medium of the letters exchanged to friends and family. For the duration of the second chapter, McPherson focuses on the underlying reasons as to why the Union soldiers fought with great force and determination through the course of the Civil War. The Unionists believed in conserving the democracy our founding fathers had established hundreds of years ago.

However, while slavery was a major cause of the American Civil War, there were several other major factors.
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Shelby Foote tells about the different perspectives of both sides of the war, ranging from Fort Sumter to Perryville. Foote explains in depth the perspectives of those that experienced the war, as well as how their lives were impacted. Growing up, Foote was always interested in writing, but it wasn’t until later in life that delved into nonfiction. He was part of the newspaper, and was mainly interested in english and history, mainly writing short stories and poems. He only began to write The Civil War: A Narrative when the publishing company Random House contacted him and asked that he write a short comprehensive book about the Civil War for the Civil War’s centennial anniversary.
