Introduction: I participated in a field trip to Tai O earlier. Before writing this report, I must first thank the teachers for organizing this extremely meaningful field trip. In this journey, I not only learned many of Tai O’s traditional culture, but also reflected on the balance between conservation and development. In the following, I will describe three parts that I think are very interesting during this journey. Facts of Tai O: Tai O is a famous fishing village located in the western part of Lantau Island, Hong Kong. People lived here very early, and the original residents were “Tanka people”. Tai O was their place of residence for generations. Their main occupation is fishermen. From the beginning of the Song Dynasty, there was also …show more content…
It is therefore an honour to have the chance to see the habitat of Chinese White Dolphins this time. At present, there are about 2,500 Chinese white dolphin inhabiting Hong Kong, and this number has continued to decrease in recent years. The tour guide leading us told us that the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge did pose a threat to the living environment of this lovely mammal. In addition, many yachts ignored the safety rules and passed through the waters at high speed, causing injuries to the dolphins. It also scares many of the same species and keeps the Chinese white dolphins away from Hong Kong waters. Of course, we must mention over-fishing, water pollution, etc., it also destroy their ecological environment. B. Feeling: This is my first visit to Tai O, but it is not the first time I have tried to watch the Chinese White Dolphins. Before this time, I had several opportunities to watch the Chinese white dolphins, but I could not see any dolphins. Therefore, my viewing this time is also holding a profitable mentality. Fortunately, the weather is well and the dolphins were also "cooperating" with us. When our ships sailed into the waters, they all jumped out of the water and surfed gracefully. I am very honored to be able to see their wonderful Hong Kong …show more content…
Otherwise, it will be too late to make any remedial measures when their numbers are reduced or even extinct. Mangrove A. Facts and Finding: Mangroves are a unique ecological environment. They are generally found in the estuaries of tropical and subtropical regions. The plants that grow there are often washed by the tides and rivers and form a unique growth pattern. In fact, the ecological environment of mangroves can be said to be very harsh for the general plants: the salinity of the water are variable, the soil is loose, and the oxygen is sometimes paralyzed... It can be said that the animals and plants that can finally stand there, All are very "resolute" species. In Tai O, the mangrove we visited was named "Yantian Mangroves." Its area is not large, but it can already find two of Hong Kong’s eight “red mangrove trees”: Kandelia and Rattus. The formation of this "Yantian mangrove forest" was due to a previous salt factory in Tai O. After the closure of this manufacturing plant, salt and fresh water flooded into the original salt drying place of the plant, making it slowly evolve into a mangrove forest and enriching the biodiversity of Tai O. B.
At first the boat went slow and the driver turned on some loud music. All of a sudden we saw some dolphins riding the waves. They were jumping and playing just like children! I was so happy to finally see dolphins. It looked like they were having fun.
Another factor is soil. The soil of a rain forest is rare and mostly acidic so plants depend on large trees falling and decomposing for their food. Also, humans moving into more deeper in forests and wild life ecosystems through expansion. Weather and tropical rainstorms could also be a limiting factor because of the intensity of the storms. Taino Indians were known for resolving their arguments by playing a game. One of many of the Arawaks achievements would be they developed the “Construction of Ceremonial Ball Park”. They are also known for making the universal language that is known around the world, The Taino Indians were forced
For many years, people have enjoyed going to SeaWorld to see the shows they would present. However, based on the documentary, Blackfish, that has changed drastically. People are now opening their eyes and seeing the inhumane treatment that these whales are being put through. Tilikum, a SeaWorld-owned killer whale, would attack the trainers during shows and, most of the time, kill them. SeaWorld denies that they are responsible for the cause of the Tilikum’s behavior by saying that the trainers should know the risks of working with killer whales.
Dylon. G Mrs.Hornseth Period:4 Bottlenose Dolphins The history and traits and what a dolphin looks like is what this rough draft is going to be mainly about. Dolphins have a big reputation for having lots of curiosity. Some people thought that dolphins were smarter than humans considering that they have more lumps and a bigger brain.
There are many characteristic that make this rainforest very distinguishing, especially things such as the rainfall and species diversity. There are a number of significant abiotic features of this rainforest are severe rainfall causing flooding, little light reaches the ground, and because it rains all year round the soil is always moist. The rainforest is known to have the biggest tropical trees, one called the Bull
In conclusion Blackfish is gives audiences a shocking, aggressive and deeply compelling look into cruel practices of marine parks for decades that will change the way you look at captive/trained killer whales and other animals. In watching this documentary has significantly opened my eyes regarding the brutal treatment and methods of capturing wild animals giving me a greater sympathy for orcas in parks such as SeaWorld. This startling documentary will surprise audiences as Cowperthwaite is unrelenting in showing the fatal consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity while also critiquing of the cruel and immoral practises of
Do you remember that day that you and your family took a trip to that one park? That one that you got to see many different types of sea animals, dolphins putting on shows, and getting to even interact with the sea animals in a great learning experience. That park is SeaWorld. When you were there, you might have not noticed the stuff that was happening behind the scenes. Lately, the animals have been very sad and not living healthy lives.
“There was one palace somewhat inferior to the rest, attached to which was a beautiful garden with balconies extending over it, supported by marble columns, and having a floor formed of jasper elegantly inlaid” (Hernan Cortes: From the Second Letter to Charles V, page 4). The workmanship in these homes and temples was something so magnificent that Cortes had never seen before. In comparison, the Taino people were a very uncultivated society and made the best of what they had on the island. As far as religion goes, Columbus said “[The Taino People] have no religion, and I believe that they would very readily become Christians, as they have a good understanding” (Journal, page 8).
Through their agricultural practices these indigenous occupants caused ecological change increasing their vegetation for survival. Shaer further explains, “Between A.D. 150 and 300, Teotihuacán grew rapidly. Locals harvested beans, avocados, peppers, and squash on fields raised in the middle of shallow lakes and swampland—a technique known as chinampa—and kept chickens and turkeys” (Shaer). A large variation of plant species were domesticated and cultivated by indigenous people to feed their tribe. The development of chinampas allowed them the harvest a range of vegetables and fruits in a shallow lake altering their environment.
Over the years, the number of deaths caused by the killer whales at Sea World increased significantly. Despite this, Sea World still decided to run their theme park and continue as though it was not a problem. Because they most likely fear of losing millions in the process, they acted in their self-interest, rather than taking the deaths and injuries in consideration. Furthermore, there is a part in the documentary that brings to light the misconceptions and lies as told by Sea World workers. Sea World workers tell tourists that collapsed dorsal fins are quite normal.
The target audience of this documentary is the general public that includes a big emphasis on the customers of SeaWorld. The filmmakers are trying to inform the public of the inhumane treatment and the conditions that the orcas face while at amusements parks such as SeaWorld. As described in the film, orcas are seen as intellectual animals that are aware of their surroundings. Because of their intellect, orcas don’t belong in a place SeaWorld and should be released.
Andre Cole Ricardo Acosta G. English 101 September 22, 2015 Do Killer Whales Actually Belong in Captivity? Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
• The landscape of south Florida (Everglades) was shaped by the extreme climate and drastic sea-level change during the Pleistocene Epoch, also known as the Ice Age. Sea levels were as much as 300 feet lower and as much as 100 feet higher than today. Even though glacial ice never stretched down as far as south Florida, the effects of remote glaciation are indisputable. As the giant glaciers in the north progressed and departed, the Florida peninsula emerged and submerged (sea-levels responded by falling and rising). As the Ice Age came to an end, sea-levels rose, FL.
They usually swim in large spaces but because there is not lots of space in their new homes they swim around in circles and circles being cheerless! Occasionally, they start banging their heads on the tanks and abuse themselves, because they have nothing to do. Put yourself in their shoes, visualize you being stuck in a room that has nothing in it, except you. I would start banging my head on the walls after a while! As a matter of fact, whales are trapped in cramped enclosures, unable to dive deeply compared to the wild where they can.
