PA 604: Domestic Violence Data Exploration Project My research topic for this data exploration project was influenced by reading the Bureau of Justice Statistics 2014 Annual Criminal Victimization Report. From that publication, an intriguing statistic caught my attention and research interest. “The rate of domestic violence, which includes crime committed by intimate partners and family members, remained stable from 2013 to 2014 (4.2 per 1,000). No measurable change was detected from 2013 to 2014 in the rate of intimate partner violence (2.4 per 1,000), which includes victimizations committed by current or former spouses, boyfriends, or girlfriends” (BJS Criminal Victimization, August 2015). I decided to investigate how this statistic was concluded by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).
Although Cherie’s volatile relationship has not erupted into physical violence, Tyrone’s threatening behavior could easily escalate from controlling and intimidating behavior to outright domestic violence, which adds another crisis component to this case. As previously mentioned, Cherie revealed that Tyrone belittles and controls her. She also said Tyrone acts excessively jealous, limits her telephone usage and access to money and credit cards. These characteristics are often mentioned when women in domestic violence shelters describe their mate (James & Gilliland, 2013, p.302).
In reality, one in fifteen children have been exposed to this type of violence, and almost 90% of them have seen this violence happen in the past (http://ncadv.org/learn-more/statistics). Women may be the majority of people who get domestically abused because of their weak persona, but men and children can be affected by these things as
Domestic violence has attracted much attention of the sociologists in India since the decades of 1980s. Violence affects the lives of millions of women, worldwide, in all socio- economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impending the right of women to participate fully in society. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all societies and classes. In earlier times, violence against women was a result of the prevalent atmosphere of ignorance and feudalism.
Integrated Responses to Domestic Violence A comprehensive 2014 study by Silke Meyer on an integrated response to domestic violence in Queensland defined ‘integrated response’ as, “a partnership response that involves formalized agreements regarding processes, roles, responsibilities and cross-unit accountability” (Meyer, 2014). A common feature is the integration of both criminal and civil response. Historically, the introduction of civil response has gained momentum since the implementation of the ‘exclusion order’, which allowed enforcement of removing a perpetrator of domestic violence from the family home. What a child sees can affect them in many ways. Exposure to interparental violence has been associated with the tendencies to worry in children. Consequently, children's anxiety is also affected by interparental violence and conflict. Additionally, interparental violence has been, linked to both internalizing and externalizing problems(Kelley 1025). Internalizing problems are negative behaviors and low self-esteem.
What could you do to stop it? Studies have shown that children exposed to domestic violence negatively impacted in reaching developmental milestones. Young children show signs of slowed process with talking, walking and socialisation and are reluctant to trust people around them. The effects of a child witnessing domestic violence is an issue that up until recently went unnoticed. As researchers have observed the lifelong impact that it has on children is almost as bad as the crime itself. According to Theresa Vargas, “These children [who witness domestic violence] are much more likely to suffer as adults from addiction and other health problems and become victims or perpetrators of violence” (Vargas 3 of 7). In 2008 a young boy from Southern Maryland named Michael, watched his mother, Erin Curtis be brutally stabbed twenty-seven times by his stepfather. Only nine years old at the time Michael called 911, a move that ultimately saved his mother’s life.

The short documentary “Child of Rage” presents an example of how experiencing abuse as a child can shape the child later in life and how some children can recover. The intrafamilial abuse that Beth experienced as a one year old affected her behavior later in her childhood when she was adopted. Beth was also able to recover from some of the effects of the child abuse she experienced once she was separated from her adoptive family and taken to a special home. Beth experienced intrafamilial abuse at the hands of her biological father after her mother passed away when she was one.

For clarification purposes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2012) refers to Domestic violence (DV) as Intimate partner violence (IPV) to specify that the definition should be used to refer to violence by one member of a couple against his/her partner. This means that elderly or child abuse that is in the same household is not included in the definition (McGarry, et al., 2014). The effects on children who are age five and older are a little different than those who are under the age of 5 and may affect areas involving psychological, social, physical, behavioral, and learning. The psychological effects of domestic violence include separation anxiety, low self-esteem, distress, PTSD and suicidal thoughts or attempts. The social effects may include aggressive play, isolation and bullying. The physical effects include bed-wetting and enuresis, hunger, and sickness. The behavioral effects may include extreme outbursts, poor attention and poor concentration.
A child who experiences trauma of domestic violence will hinder their emotional growth, hence the child will not develop and maintain a normal level of trust. A child that experiences domestic violence or is exposed to domestic violence can develop a fear of their environment, for they think that everyone will try to hurt them. They also do not trust anyone with their problems or issues, hence they will keep everything inside and this will affect their state of mind. An abused spouse may experience chronic psydiasmatic pain or pain due to diffuse trauma without visible evidence. This form of pain will have a very bad effect on the body.
