Continental Drift
Scientist Alfred Wegener was the person who came up with Continental Drift Theory in 20th century. He proposed that continents were first joined together and as the time passed they drift. Continental drift narrates one of the oldest ways geologists thought continents shifted over the time. Today, science of tectonic plates has replaced this theory of continental drift.
Fossil Evidence
In 1911 he discovered the locations of similar plants and animal fossils on different continents. Fresh water reptile measosaurus, a land reptile lystroaurus and cynognathus and a tropical fern glossopteris are some fossils included in his study. Looking at their similarities, he wondered how they are existing on such different land masses? Current theories suggest that land bridges connected the continents with each other that were eroded away or by stepping stone. Wegner than stated a much simpler hypothesis that explained the fit of the coastline though the continents were all together. He then propounded the supercontinent which he named Pangaea, which means “on earth”. Pangaea

He studied stratigraphy of mountains and rocks. He discovered that the layers of the rocks of east coast of South America west coast Africa fit together perfectly. They both were not only the similar continents with respect to geology. Appalachian Mountains of United States were geologically related to Caledonian Mountain in Scotland.
Pangaea prevailed from about 240 million years ago. The supercontinent began breaking up about 200 million years ago. Then it separated into pieces and moved away from one another. Then these pieces took their positions as the continents we see
INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous Period, spanning 65.5-146 million years ago (Mya), was a world different from what we are familiar with today. Planetary changes during this period included the extinction of dinosaurs and drastic global warming. The breakup of the super continent Pangea had started about 30 Mya, and seaways had begun to form and cover landmass that had once been a part of the super continent (Geologic Time). Today, scientists know that one of these landmasses, the North American continent as we now know it, was at one point covered by a vast inland sea known as the Western Interior Seaway.
The last remnant of the supercontinent Gondwanaland finally separated into Australia and Antarctica between 30 and 40 million years ago. Isolated on an enormous northward-drifting raft the inhabitants of the Australian continent evolved and diversified over millions of years as the climate cycled through periods of warm and cool, wet and dry. Along the southern boundary were three separate arches which were rising due to the Taconic orogeny: Kankakee, Findlay, and Cincinnati. The upward movement of these arches were integral in the depressive basins forming adjacent to them: Michigan, Illinois, and Appalachian. However, the original weakening of the continental lithosphere is suggested to have been caused by the introduction of a rising diaper (Haxby, Turcotte, Bird 1976). Erosional and weathered material from the nearby forming mountains were transported and deposited into the many basins west of the mountain belt. The sediment would continue to accumulate and accentuate the subsidence which was occurring and further deepen the basin.
The sites stratigraphy was studied again in the 80s and it was
1769) The Shaping of North America - Before North America even existed, there was Pangea, when the Earth only had one huge land mass. - The continuous shifting of the tectonic plates in the Earth kept moving resulting in the splitting Pangea. - After many years, it formed to the Earth that we now know today. - By about 10 million years ago, nature made the basic geological shape of North America along with all of the other continents.
The theory of Pangaea was first discovered by Alfred Wegener. It was orginally ridiculed but later climate, fossil plants and animals, glaciations proved this theory and it became widely known and recognized. It is totally relevant and meaningful to the theory of evolution. Although there were other professionals in this trial, some of the information was vague or subjective. For example, Kirtley F Mather answered the
Well, there are many theories. There is the aboriginal legend, the Bible theory and then the scientist theory. All of which lead to the same conclusion, however, the processes of getting to the conclusion are completely different. Scientist's believe that 30-22 million years ago the continent was thought to be moving over a 'hot-spot' in the earths mantle beneath the crust.
Political Movements: In July 4,1840, the Independent Treasury Act was signed into Law by President Martin Van Buren. It made the Federal Government exclusively responsible for managing its own funds. In 1840 the Anti-Slavery convention in London, William LLoyd Garrison and others walked out when women abolitionists were not allowed to be seated as delegate.
The last undiscovered lands on Earth, including interior Africa and Asia, were discovered during this century, and with the exception
Next over a long span of time the uplift, erosion, and glaciation of the rocks formed the landscape we see today. It all started when large amounts of sand and mud eroded from ancient
I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains, with a rocky backyard. My brother and I came to discover that there were imprints in the sedimentary rocks. Looking for arrowheads was a pass time. This was my first experiences with fossils and artifacts. We found many different shapes within those rocks.
The discovery of this mammal was proof that mammals had lived alongside the dinosaurs. It gave scientist a small glimpse into ancient mammal species. Chapter 6– Questions
I agree with Morgan’s central ideas that there is no true first hand accounts of true westward expansion. I believe that there are no first hand accounts there is only biographies about the people that played a big role in westward expansion. There are no first hand accounts of the people physically moving from west that i have read or heard about. In “Chief Joseph Speaks Selected Statements and Speeches by the Nez Percé Chief” there are many speeches done by Chief Joseph that are accounts of westward expansion but they are in third person.
Many ideas led him to believe what he believed. One of them was, James Hutton’s ideas about geological change. His theory consisted that sediments, rocks, soil, etc were made after the great flood and new species “rose” from that disaster and that it’s a cycle. Charles Lyell’s theory also shaped his thinking. Lyell wrote the book of “Principles of Geology”, where Hutton became famous.
At the time is was believed that Earth was the center of the
