Why do people make an initial judgement about a person they have only seen or heard about? Without any information at all, the brain formulates an answer to the question they were pondering: who is that person? One of our greatest sins is to place people into boxes, defining them into one shape, into one dimension. Stereotypes are a very predominant part of reality as well as fictional works. In the novels The Hangman’s Daughter and The Dark Monk , by Oliver Pötzsch, one of the most prevalent themes presented is the idea that people do not necessarily reflect what society expects from them, either because of their role or position within the community.

This opinion will be the image inside your head until you genuinely get to understand that person., but judgement with still occur because humans do this for an eccentric reason. This exhibits irony; children and teenagers perceive their parents to be infallible. There are many differences between adults and teens.

Sometimes those opinions are accurate, but most of the time they are not. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible this can be read first hand. In modern day society, people make accusations and opinions based on prior knowledge and experiences.
In an article Menon stated, “We generally tend to judge people just by looking at their outward appearance” (Menon 1). This is true, but why is everyone so quick to judge? Nearly all the population finds it easier to establish groups before getting to know them because they don’t want to take the time to learn about a person. Outer appearance can say nothing of a person’s moral, looks can be deceiving. Menon later stated, “I find it thought provoking how someone could get so attached to another person and trust him or her so wholly after just knowing how he or she looks” (Menon 1).
What makes a first impression of a person? Is it their accent, personality, height, skin color? All of these things together make up a first impression of a person. Throughout time however, the first impression of a person has been made largely based on the race of that person. Asian people will react differently to white people differently than they will other Asian colored people.

After childhood, people come to realise that the world is a cruel place. People misjudge others; thus, over time, people grow to accept the amount of brutality in the world. Parents often tell their children that first impressions count, mainly because others are quick to judge. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, first impressions of people are never correct, as we judge people after mere seconds, and we are often incorrect in our assumptions of people.

First impressions are made when people encounter each other (or things) for the first time. They set the tone for the relationship that will follow. It only takes a few seconds for someone to develop an impression. Once an impression has been made, it can be very difficult to change. Whether it is the first impression made during a job interview, while greeting a customer at work, or the first time seeing a new doctor, a person’s first encounter will usually be remembered.
For example, the villagers would throw rocks at the monster to make him leave. This reaction made the monster feel even more terrible. First impressions are still a great part of society as well as the instant judgment on someone. Another example in todays society, someone could be driving around town and see an African-American male in a fancy care, the first thing that they could think of is that this man has stole someone 's car. This is an example of a common stereotype.
