The Persons Case, a Defining Moment for Canada. Madeleine Balfour History 111 Dr. Denis Dubord May 26, 2017 In 2015, the Prime Minister of Canada announced a gender balanced cabinet in which half of its members were women. However, it was not until the Emily Murphy and the Famous Five won the Persons Case, a mere 88 years ago, that women were legally considered people. In the mid to late 19th century, political, and public life was largely run by men at the provincial and municipal levels.
When Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier stated, “As the 19th century was that of the United States, so I think the 20th century shall be filled by Canada”, the decades that followed provided his statement to be true as Canada became an independent and strong nation. The battlefields in World War One were a defining moment for Canada as their forces fought as one nation for the first time, instead of under British Command. Also, at the end of the war, Canada was recognized at the Peace Conference and signed the Treaty of Versailles as an independent country. In addition, Canada joined the League of Nations, playing a major role in world politics. These events in the early 20th century allowed the beginning of a strong nation with a growing national
Different diversities of many human populations believe Canada is one of the best places to live in. What is their reason for this belief? Canada is home to many citizens who take pride in their identities that set them apart from other people. Social, economic, and political factors can influence the identities of many Canadians today. Society in Canada differs from other countries and provides a safe atmosphere for all citizens.
Doctor Shortage in Canada Vlera Sylejmani Huron Heights Secondary School CHallenge and Change Mr.Ozimok June 16, 2023 The lack of doctors in Canada remains a significant issue that has to be addressed and changed. The highly strict, lengthy, and challenging medical school admissions process, the naturally stressful healthcare industry, combined with the uneven geographic distribution of doctors, all contribute to the situation that Canada is currently experiencing, especially after COVID 19. In order for doctors to be able to practice, it is crucial that the Canadian government and its provinces tackle these challenges, keeps working to improve working conditions, and creates resources like hospitals and the equipment needed in distant locations. All societies require healthcare services in order to be thriving and healthy, and doctors play a major role in all societies, they ensure that patients receive medical attention, diagnosis, and treatment, and overall they maintain the health of citizens, therefore
The one major difference between the Canadian health care system and the American health care system is that is that they have a privatized health care system. A documentary such as “Sicko directed by Michael Moore” demonstrates the crisis of American citizens without health care coverage. Canada’s universal health care system ensures those who cannot pay for health to not suffer, contrary to the Sicko
Canada has a little piece of almost every culture in the world, shown through the large amount of people moving to Canada from every continent in the world. The multitude of cultures is displayed through the plethora of festivals held throughout the country every year, such as the Folk Fest, Edmonton Food Festival, Heritage Festival and the International Film Festival, all bringing in various cultures and traditions from around the world. Canada has all of these festivals due to the large amount of immigration that was even shown in Anita Rau Badami’s essay my Canada, when she and her husband had moved from India to Vancouver. Canada is one if not the most desirable countries to immigrate to, not only for the living conditions but because of the ability to keep your culture and not have to assimilate to a “Canadian” culture. Thanks to immigration Canada has become a great model country to look at for cultural diversity and cultural acceptance that any country can look at and try to model in their own
Social Welfare Policy and Child Protection – Strength and Limitations Since last two decades Canada being experienced softer and harder forms of neo-liberal economic impetus (McKeen, 2006). Many of these reforms targeted social benefits and divided marginalized people into deserved and undeserved category (McKeen, 2006). At a large level, social policies are shaped by the exploration of dominant ideas about a social issue. Existing political views and the interest of the dominant policy community are predominantly influencing policy making (McKeen, 2006). The mainstream discourses for solutions of social problems and policy outcomes are increasingly underrepresented and narrow down the focus of social welfare in Canada (McKeen, 2006).
Canada has had several things that have made it a good country to live in. In the first half of the twentieth century, Canada fought in many battles during the World Wars that had a positive impact on the world. On top of that, there are many Canadians that made notable changes in Canada and the rest of the world. Lastly, Canadians have created technologies that are very important to the way we live today. After looking at these factors, it can be said that Canada is a country that its citizens should be proud of.
Health care should not be considered a political argument in America; it is a matter of basic human rights. Something that many people seem to forget is that the US is the only industrialized western nation that lacks a universal health care system. The National Health Care Disparities Report, as well as author and health care worker Nicholas Conley and Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), strongly suggest that the US needs a universal health care system. The most secure solution for many problems in America, such as wasted spending on a flawed non-universal health care system and 46.8 million Americans being uninsured, is to organize a national health care program in the US that covers all citizens for medical necessities.
Today, Canada is seen as a multicultural and peaceful nation that has evolved over the course of history. This great nation would never have been possible without the impact that former Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson left on this country. His achievements and insights profoundly affected and shaped Canada’s nation. First, peacekeeping is an important part of Canada’s heritage and a reflection of its fundamental beliefs that Pearson implemented after dealing with world changing situations and winning a Nobel Prize. Also, his contributions as a liberal leader as well as the flaws and controversy with Diefenbaker did in fact define this country.
Think about it, we have a hot and cold climate that a lot of other nations have. Our landscape is beautiful but is something seen everywhere because believe it or not, mountains, forests and lakes are quite common. Our food is very limited in variety, uniqueness and taste. I mean can you even name one other classic Canadian dish other than poutine? Finally, other than Quebec and its obsession with French and how it is one of our official languages, we speak primarily English everywhere.
Canada enjoys the benefits of a “universal” insurance plan funded by the federal government. The idea of having a publicly administered, accessible hospital and medical services with comprehensive coverage, universality and portability has its own complex history, more so, than the many challenges in trying to accommodate the responsibility of a shared-cost agreement between federal and provincial governments. (Tiedemann, 2008) Canada’s health care system has gone through many reforms, always with the intent to deliver the most adequate health care to Canadians. The British North American Act, Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act, Saskatchewan’s Medical Care Act, and the Canada Health Act are four Acts that have played an important

Canada offers free education, healthcare and lastly, it is one of the safest and secure countries in the world. Canada is a great place to live in and one of the greatest reasons is that Canada offers free education to kids from kindergarten to Grade 12. Each province does have certain changes in the there education system but throughout Canada, it is mandatory and free of charge to go to school.
