An example of an case where the police’s use of force were questioned was the Wardlaw v. Pickett case. In this case a man named, William C. Wardlaw decided to sue the United States Deputy Marshals, William Pickett and Albert Crew. Wardlaw claimed that the two violated his constitutional rights by using excessive force on him and falsing arresting and prosecuting him.
There arises a problem when the officers intended to uphold this law target individuals solely based on their race. Daniel Shaver was an unarmed man fatally shot for no good reason. He was complying with the police officers orders and was begging for his life, screaming “please don’t shoot,” before he was fatally shot 5 times. Unfortunately, this is just one example of police brutality, an instance when police use unnecessary force when either they are unarmed or are complying with orders. Today I want to tell you of the injustice of police brutality, the people it affects, and how just asking the right questions could make sure that police are punished for their crimes.
The two moral reasonings are consequentialist and categorical. Consequentialist means the consequences that will result after whatever you do, whether it is the right or wrong thing to do. Categorical moral reasoning locates morality in certain duties and rights. Somethings are just morally wrong even if it brings good outcomes. According to Mill the principle of utility means realizing a consequence of something before you do it,whether your intentions are good or bad.
This technique is use when an officer has to go hand on without using disabling injury with an individual to get him or her detain. For example, if the officer advised an individual to place his or her hands behind their back, but the suspect refused the officer make use a takedown technique to detain the suspect. Use of lethal compliance techniques is when an officer physically incapacitates the individual when trying to make the arrest of the individual. For example, if the officer witnessed an individual to commit a crime in his presence and the officer advised that person to stop and the suspect flee from the officer. The officer advised dispatch of the incident and take off running after the suspect and the officer caught the suspect, but the suspect started to resist by fighting the officer.
