To kill a mockingbird in set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. It is set in the middle of the Great Depression in the 1929 to 1939, and was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. It began after the stock market crashed in October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. Scout Finch is a six-year-old girl who lives with her older brother Jem and her widowed father Atticus. Atticus is a lawyer and works hard enough to support his family, but he works long hours. They have a black cook, Calpurnia and she helps to raise the kids. Scout and Jem spend most of their days playing. The highlight of Jem and Scout's year is when they occasionally find presents in the eyehole of the tree next to the Radley house. Summer is back and Dill returns. The children grow more excited to sneak to the Radley property. Nathan Radley sees them and thinks they're thieves. They run away and Jem's pants get stuck in the fence. He leaves them behind. Later the night he returns to get them back and find them mended and folded. Scout and Jem continue to find gifts in the tree until one-day Nathan Radley cements the hole completely. Later, Miss Maudie Atkinson's house caught fire and burned down. While this is happening, the Finch's observe and someone places a blanket around Scout's
