Just recently I read Touching Spirit Bear, it inspired me to construct my own totem pole. Before I tell you about my totem pole, I should tell you more about totem poles in general. A totem pole plays a vast part in Native American heritage. Totem poles are part of numerous indigenous people from Alaska, British Columbia, and Pacific Northwest tribes. These emblems serve multiple purposes beyond their beauty, and their meanings are as varied as the cultures that create them. Some totem poles represent stories, important events, friendship, death, birth, and countless other things. These symbols have slightly different meanings, and their meanings are special for the people who assemble them. I am going to share with you what animals I would have on my totem pole and the reasons behind them. Nevertheless, my first animal is the elephant. One of the reasons that I chose this is animal family and friends are a giant part of an elephant’s life. They also like to be touched or embraced. I relate to this since friends and family are tremendously important in my life. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my family or friends. Also, I love to be embraced, and I love to nestle. Another way I relate to an elephant is, I have a strong social bond, and I prefer to be in enormous groups with friends, and family. Secondly, I chose my second animal is a sloth. Sloths are extremely lazy, that is why I chose them. I sometimes choose not to be that lazy, but there are days where I can
The totem pole was a very large pole with wood carving of animals the carving were made in three or more layers and symbolized
Prolific for its apocalyptic portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln’s election, Senator Robert Toombs’ speech to the Georgia state legislature reveals how Southerners were concerned about the longevity of their lifestyle. Utilizing passionate rhetoric, The South Must Strike while There Is Yet Time illustrates how the future of the Union has become unpredictable and warrants action from legislators. An address of vigorous pathos, Toombs details how the security of Southern values remains paramount to the decision of secession. Moreover, the discourse over secession often features slavery and emphasizes its role in Southern identity, deeming it essential to the preservation of their way of life. The perception of Lincoln as a radical abolitionist
It is ironic and satirical that the museum staff treat the totem pole, a symbol of Indigenous culture and spirituality, as a mere object that can easily be moved around whenever they please. Additionally, there is irony in that the totem pole is being “temporarily” relocated as if it is a minor inconvenience that will later be dealt with, even though the relocation of the
After reading this novel, I have started to think of animals that symbolize how I was like in my past, present, and future. Furthermore, Monkeys are very playful creatures and have a tribe that puts each other first. A deer is a symbol of sensitivity and kindness, they symbolize feminine qualities. Lastly, bears
Some traditions were also to roll a flaming wagon down a hill to mark the turning wheel of the year. The Winter Nights festival commemorates the remembrance of family spirits and honoring Disir. Lastly, Einherjar or the feast of the fallen, was a very important holiday for the Asatru. This is held on November 11 of every year , as it honours the fallen in battle and joined Odin's warriors in Valhalla. Totem animals such as the bear, boar, bovine, dragon, eagle, horse, raven, stag, and wolf were common animals you saw in totems, as they were very rich in spiritual symbolism.
Symbolism especially with animals played a huge part in the Native American religion party. Native American religion is something hard to define. In order for you to understand the meaning of their religion you have to grow up submersed in the beliefs, practices, and know the traditions of any tribe. It’s something really different, it isn’t the same as becoming a born-again Christian or converting to judaism. Each tribute and peoples had their own unique beliefs, legends, and rituals, but they all believed the world was filled with spirits.
He has sacred animals, such as the panther, the bull, and then the serpent. The sacred animals the panther and the bull are his animals because both the animal and its skin appear in artistic depictions of the god. His symbols were the pine-cone staff, thyrsos-staff head and the drinking cup. One of his symbols
Do you know the name of this statue? It is an important symbol for American people. Let me tell you about it. This is the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York City.
Contradicting the grandmother’s ability to preserve and display her cultural heirloom, preservation was not an option considered for the museum’s totem pole in King’s short story. Rather than viewing the totem pole as a piece of art and allowing it to remain in the place it was built, the workers of the museum deem it necessary to “get a chainsaw and cut it close to the floor”. It may be that the Chinese grandmother was able to preserve a relic on her own, among her family, her own “isolated island”, King’s short story teaches how it is vital for all cultures to be respectful and understanding of others cultural practices and teaching. Although indigenous teachings may be their most well established among certain regions of Canada, the display of indigenous relics across the country is an example of its multiculturalism and its delight to display varying arts and cultures. King demonstrates how preservation of culture must be a collective effort, so that traditions do not remain exclusive to “isolated
The article “Seattle's Native American art reconnects with Salish tribes' traditions” on theguardian.com said that it's impossible to picture the Pacific Northwest tribes without the image of a totem pole. “Considered by many as the emblem of the native people of North America, the poles have been the iconic symbol of the region since the late 19th century… The tradition of art-making focused on smaller, personal objects or interior houseposts shown only to select guests.” Masks were carefully carved from cedar trees into many sizes and shapes with different patterns. From the grasses, rushes, roots and bark, they made baskets and weaved mats.
Just like otters, I love to have a good time! The last animal on my totem pole is a lion. Lions are bold and loyal. They are self-confident and boastful.
El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado, flowers, candy Calaveras, and parades. It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on October 31 leave on November 2. In order to celebrate, the families make altars and place ofrendas of food such as pan de muertos baked in shapes of skulls and figures, candles, incense, yellow marigolds known as cempazuchitl (also spelled zempasuchil) and most importantly a photo of the departed soul are placed on the altar.
People sometimes take for granted the friendship that they possess with an animal that they love dearly. Life can be hard, difficult, and troublesome at times. Our dreams and wants help drive, fulfill, and give us hope. But no matter how many plans are made, the cards that are dealt must be
Humans and animals are loyal, friendly, and understanding species which allows them to understand each other. People and animals are like no other, they can share a special bond and learn to love one another other. But, there are reasons why they are so loyal to one and other, why they are friendly to one and other, and why they understand each other. These bonds are often unbreakable. One way people and animals get along is when they show loyalty to each other.
During her childhood, my mother had pets that varied from the typical dog and cat to ferrets, rabbits, frogs, and birds. She was the type of child that would find an animal on the street or in the woods, and bring it back home to keep as a pet, and her parents, my grandparents, even encouraged her to do so. I had the same behavior when I was a child; I, too, had frogs, dogs,
