Personally, I agree with this opinion. When breaking the rules there are consequences to go along with it. Prison can be a very violent place, as there are many stressors and reasons for frustration and depression. Having members of different gangs, does not calm the situation down. Cells and inmates have to be regularly checked in order to keep contraband such as drugs, liquor, phones ect.
The article also discusses how sexual aggression plays a very large role in violence overall, due to an inmate who is a sexual aggressor who uses violence on their victim and then the victim retaliating against the aggressor using violence, a type of behavior that is comparable to the eye for an eye ideal. Furthermore the article explains some of the other reasons that inmates get into fights, including, “accidental, real, or imagined insults combined with hypersensitivity, homosexual activities, pressuring for possessions, racial conflict, informant activities, and retaliation for past assaults.” Lockwood illustrates that there are several reasons that inmates are violent and that these are only a few of the reasons. Then the article states a study on when and how the violent acts were instigated, stating that of the 114 incidents observed 42 of them begun by “sexual overtures accompanied by offensive gestures and remarks,” 36 of them started with “polite propositions,” 21 of them starting with physical attacks and 15 of them beginning with verbal threats.
With gang violence continually getting worse in the United States, prisons and their staff need to make sure they are ready to take on dealing with them. This includes having the right amount of staff so chaos doesn 't break out. It is important for everyone to be aware in these situations so in the long run the government systems do not actually make it worse (Trulson, Marquart, and Kawucha). Correctional officers and guards are an important reason to why prison gangs exist and are thriving. Officers use to be able to know the names of all the inmates, thus the inmates tended to behave better for they knew if they violated a code they would get in trouble.
In exchange for the gangs allegiance once within prison walls will have the protection of the Nuestra Familia prison gang. Although not as powerful as the Mexican Mafia, the Nuestra Familia is not any less violent within prisons.
The city of Las Vegas has changed rapidly from becoming a beautiful city to a violent place to live in. The city has seemed a rise in homicides as well in the last few years. The strong presences of these gangs are taking innocent lives and making the community a harder place to raise a family in. Most inmates who are recruited mostly for their protection are usually the ones who get out of prison in 1 year or less. Therefore the gangs use them once they are out or threaten them. In Chicago, and all over the nation, the effects of gang activity have been displayed, specifically in low income and poverty torn communities. Poverty is measured depending on a family’s annual income and determining if the amount falls below the poverty threshold for the family’s size. The characteristics of this Gang is really Organized, they go by ranking structures they have their soldiers, caporegime , under boss, and the boss. They are many ways to extinguish them by their tattoos, the color green in clothing, the Mexican flag, the number 13, the Aztecas, or a letter “M”. You have to do jobs for them in order to get in or follow orders, or get beat by the gang to get in and if successful you will be in the gang and will “always be protected by them ”.
Prison gangs thrive on crime within the facility. If not addressed their involvement in crime will continue to grow and pose a threat to other inmates, staff, and the institution. If procedures are not put into place then gang membership will only continue and remain a safety concern. Administration must ensure their staff members are adequately trained and know how to act and deal with the gangs. Because the prison community is so private more research needs to be done to understand the workings of prison gangs and get more current, detailed, data.
Some teens become gang members because they feel a sense of belonging and protection. Therefore, the community should focus on building strong relationship and positive role-models. Where I reside, Silver Spring Maryland (Montgomery County), there are no gang related activities. I live in a suburban area and the law enforcement are very strict and the area is safe. However, gang crimes exist in Prince George's County and Baltimore City, Maryland. Maryland had passed ordinances prohibiting loitering, and many forms of aggressive public behavior, such as, consuming alcohol in public, throwing up gang signs and disturbing the peace by playing music too loud. Law enforcement police attempted to discourage gang membership by prohibiting behavior that relates to gang activities.
When in prison, we see that those who were in gangs are still in gangs and that those who were not, are likely to join during their sentence. Naturally the prisons are filled with criminals who not only bring with them a record of past wrong but also an attitude of anger and or survival when they walk behind the walls of prison.
