Columbus -- Hero or Villain Many people see Columbus as a hero and even though he changed people's way of life economically, religiously, and politically he also destroyed the natives way of life in the process. Columbus set sail out of Spain in 1492 looking for a faster route to the products and goods from the east but instead he spotted land at watling island in the Bahamas.
In fourteen ninety two, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue to find the world of new. Though the History books have a preconceived idea that he was a benevolent adventurer, Bartolome De Las Casas proclaims Columbus’ interactions differently. De Las Casas described several events during Columbus’ encounter with the Native Americans. Columbus demoralized the Native Americans by regarding them as subhumans, disintegrated their families, and committed mass murders. What the textbooks fail to include are the immoralities that could possibly shed a new light on your perspective of Christopher Columbus.

Christopher Columbus is a Villain The definition of a villain is someone who hurts other people for no good, and their main goal is to thrill themselves and not care for anyone else. Christopher Columbus's story has two sides, one being the children's tale and rhyme of how Christopher Columbus “discovered” America, and the other showing why he was no hero to our country. During his first voyage in 1492, his crewman had an exhausting trip on there way to find the East Indies. Even though many people believe that christopher columbus was a hero I have found in my opinion that I believe he was a villain. I believe this because in the 4th document in the article about Christopher Columbus it was said that many people and indians were killed after his arrival and before his arrival there were many more people there than after his arrival. The people were killed from war, slavery and working in mines for Columbus. One other reason that I believe he was a villain is because if I was those people who were ruled by Columbus I would have stood up for not just me but everyone who was being mistreated by Columbus.
What is found to contradict Columbus being a hero is him telling of taking away people against their will to Spain. Just as human souvenirs. His obsessed greed to find wealth within the new world (that he thought to be India) as in spices and silks. On account of Las Casa’s thoughts he expressed great distaste for Columbus in the first place because of his greed blinding him against human rights. He brought sickness, and pain to the people he visited by also rape, theft, disease, and degrading the people he conquered.

Today, Christopher Columbus is primarily viewed as an important historic figure and a hero for his famous voyages in the 1400’s. However, many people to this day still debate whether he should be known as a hero or a villain. In my opinion, Christopher Columbus should not be considered a hero. A hero is somebody who performs good deeds for the sake of others, and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus just wanted to find gold and riches for himself and the country of Spain.
Christopher Columbus, hero or villain? My family when surveyed all voted villain. Chloe 12 year old, “if someone came to your house, kill all your people and took your house for theirs, equals V-I-L-L-A-I-N.” You have to love teenagers. The debate has been discussed many times and visiting some online sites to see opinions it seems the villain description wins.
Christopher Columbus was and still is a very controversial figure in history. Historically Columbus has been praised for his brave discovery of America, with many of the darker facts being covered up. Some say the world would not be the same without him, but others argue that all of the advancements he made do not make up for all the atrocities he committed against Natives. Even when he discovered America in 1492, it was because of pure luck, not because he was a daring explorer. Christopher Columbus’s legacy should be criticized because of his lack of knowledge about exploring and his despicable acts against indigenous people.
