The Romans are a very influential civilization who accomplished many things at its time. They might even be considered the second most inspirational civilization only second to that of Greece. Rome was a great power with great success in its time. It is this success that has been attributed to many things, such as their architecture, army, and government. The two main reasons that Rome might have been successful was its government and its army. The Romans had a well thought out government, which is believed to have been made after that of Lycurgus, the Spartan lawmaker. If this was so, the Romans made changes to the original plan throughout many years. Polybius writes of this saying, “From the time of the crossing of Xerxes to Greece, and more especially from a date some thirty-two years after that, the details of the Roman political system continued to pass through even more satisfactory modifications, and had arrived at its best and most perfect form at the time of the Hannibalic War.”1 This government was designed so that each level of power could not try to take all authority for itself. This form of rule was used by the Romans until Julius Caesar took hold of it. Their army was also well thought out with many particulars which made their legions as great as they are famous. They are reasons and might be considered good reasons, but they are not the root of it all. The root of the Romans success was that they were not overly prideful to learn from others in order to build themselves up, especially from the Greeks. The Greeks, as great as they were, were a prideful people who were constantly fighting amongst themselves. The Romans’, though, were able to take some of the greatest parts of the Greek civilization and use it for their own benefit. This was the root of their success which proves that the greatest things can start with the simplest
