Lewis and Clark were known for an incredible journey that changed US history. The journey increased the size of the US dramatically. From May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806, a dangerous but yet history changing exploration occurred. Through many dangerous situations and hardships, the expedition of Lewis and Clark turned out a success.

Lewis and Clark Expedition In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson managed to initiate the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which was also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, after the Purchase of Louisiana, which was considered one of his highlights during his political career, marking the first government-sponsored exploration. President Thomas appointed Meriwether Lewis, the private secretary of the president, to be the Commander of the Expedition. Lewis also asked his close friend William Clark, who Lewis had served with in the army, to help him with the expedition and he actually named Clark the co-commander of the expedition. Generally speaking, the expedition had a significant impact on American history.
Lewis served as Jefferson’s private secretary for about a year and a half when Jefferson asked Lewis to lead the expedition through the Louisiana Territory, Lewis gladly accepted and asked William Clark to serve as co-captain whom also accepted (Harper). Together Lewis and Clark gathered over thirty men and created The Corps of Discovery (Harper). Lewis and Clark along with The Corps of Discovery successfully Navigated and Documented the Louisiana Territory (Harper). After the expedition Jefferson made Lewis the governor of the Louisiana Territory (Harper). During his time as governor Lewis did many things, he oversaw the creation of the Territory of Arkansas, and he ordered for the creation of a road connecting St. Louis and New Madrid, Missouri (Harper).
The Lewis and Clark expedition marked the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the United States. The expedition occurred from the Louisiana Purchase which allowed Jefferson to turn away from his strict ideals of the Constitution to pull through with this purchase for the country's good. The Louisiana Purchase managed strong support by many Americans which lead to the Lewis and Clark expedition. The expeditions leaders were Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark who set out from St. Louis in 1804 and reached the Oregon coast on the Pacific Ocean. The two explorers turned back and completed the return journey in 1806.
It was thomas jefferson's newly owned land and his will to explore it he decided to send explorers across it in which he named the corps of discovery. The heads of the group were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. When starting the expedition meriwether lewis bought many gifts for the indians such as beads, coats, fabrics, and hats that could hopefully help convince the indians to be relatively good friends with the explorers and our country. When the expedition started exploring in 1803 they started down the Mississippi river on three ships and didn’t run into any american indians. as they traveled they learned about many new things such as minerals and plants so far unknown to science and eventually sent a care package back to president Jefferson on one of the three ships to show him all the new scientific discoveries that the expedition had made.
Let’s just say what if Lewis and Clark Expedition didn’t happen, I believe that United States would have still successfully claim the Pacific Northwest without Lewis and Clark. Even though the expedition happened, they still helped out the Americans understand what was in the west side of the country. But there are still some some things that are recalled for that Lewis and Clark failed their mission, and yet America would have still claim Pacific Northwest without needing Lewis and Clark. With or without Lewis and Clark Expedition, I strongly believe that United States would have still claim the Pacific Northwest. Lewis and Clark Expedition discovered many great things in the west.
Throughout the book The Captain’s Dog, the story of the Lewis and Clark expedition is told from the perspective of Lewis’ dog, Seaman. Lewis, Clark, and their men faced many hardships and successes that today I admire, such as discovering new animals and land and reaching the Pacific Ocean. Although, during the expedition they harmed Native Americans which is something I don’t admire. One thing I admire about Lewis and Clark was how they discovered new animals and land. During the expedition, they found many new animals such as coyotes, prairie dogs, buffalo, various species of birds, and many more.
In the early 1800’s President Thomas Jefferson requested money from Congress to explore the trans-Mississippi west, however this expedition was intended to explore land which would become part of the United States through the Louisiana purchase. This plan for exploration included Jefferson’s secretary, Meriwether Lewis. Lewis selected William Clark to be his co-captain throughout the trip. Jefferson’s main goals were to have the new lands’ fit his commercial and military needs. He hoped that a northwest passage would be found to make an easier access to the Pacific Ocean.
Louisiana Purchase was one of the biggest land transaction in our antiquity. In the year 1803, United States compensated around the ballpark figure of fifteen million dollars for over eight hundred thousand miles of estate. This purchase was one of his most glorified deal that he ever made but also posed a major philosophical dilemma for Jefferson. He was against the strong, central government but felt it was necessary in terms of abroad affairs.

In 1803 as President of the United States, Jefferson purchased more than 800,000 square miles of Louisiana Territory from France for about $15 million, effectively doubling the size of the United States this was an important contribution of Thomas Jefferson. Having just greatly increased the size of the United States, Jefferson wanted to explore both the new part of the country and the rest of the continent. He appointed as his secretary Meriwether Lewis, who then enlisted William Clark. They left on their journey in 1804 with the goals of learning more about the landscape and the Native American tribes, and to finding a water passage between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean.
President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery to have the Lewis and Clark expedition find a waterway that could connect the United States for transportation because he had aspirations to expand to the Pacific and Northwest making the expedition important to his agenda for the United States. (The Corp of Discovery, 2016). Another reason for the important expedition was to create a relationship with the American Indians, and the American fur trade, while learning the North American topography and geography of the land which was also important to the exploration (Corps of Discover, 2016). In 1804, a new age was dawning; the economy was growing, and so was the United States. For the sake of westward expansion, President Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory for the price of 15 million dollars, more than doubling the size of the United States. He then sent Meriwether Lewis, with his former military superior and chosen co-captain, William Clark, on an expedition into the West (Britannica). They and their team of over thirty men, the Corps of Discovery, set off with their goal not only to document their discoveries, but also to establish ties with native people, expand the American fur trade, and search for the Northwest Passage (Klepeis, 24). Along the way, the group faced countless dangers that put them at the risk of failure.
The President purchased from France for 15 million dollars in order to improve America’s trade and commerce. However, the Congress believed that the president did not have the power to purchase land and that the purchase added up to the increasing national debt. To prove to the Congress that the land was not a “worthless dessert”, President Jefferson assigned his friend Lewis and Clark to explore the western land. After Lewis returned from the expedition, Thomas Jefferson appointed him as the Governor of the upper Louisiana territory.
