Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Severe mental health issues such as severe anxiety disorder, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, or sensory perception disorder are illnesses which are common among the people responsible for the numerous mass shootings in America. Many believe the possession of firearms in the hands of the mentally ill are the real cause of mass shootings.
Schizoaffective disorder: Daniel Daniel is a 17-year-old Spanish decent male who was rushed to the hospital with Auditory hallucinations, Euphoria and Paranoid contemplations and thoughts. Daniel has no history of alcohol or substance misuse, or any medical history but his mother expressed he has become socially withdrawn which began around the age of 13, this happened after the passing of his dad who was 40 years more established than his mom. During that time he became very withdrawn toward family and friends as well as not getting enough sleep, and his concentration is affected, has episodes of manic mood or an unexpected increase in energy and behavioral displays that are out of his character. His mother stated this behavior has been going on for about two weeks and getting worse by the day. Now a senior in high school he has lost interest in school and his grades are declining he also is losing interest in the new job he just received at Mcdonalds as a part time cook.

Mental disorders are mostly seen as crazy psychopaths from people who do not know a person with a mental disorder however, that is not the case. Many Americans struggle with different types of mental disorders like OCD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders, and more. Everyone with a mental illness mostly lives in their heads and treating these disorders provides a great relief for many.
The movie Shutter Island is overwhelmingly filled with themes of mental health. Before moving into the content of this paper I would like to disclose this movie contains a false and melodramatic portrayal of mental illness, this is not an accurate representation of the field. The movie begins with Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner traveling to a secluded island containing a mental facility for the criminally insane. They are supposedly there to investigate a missing patient, however, throughout the movie we see clips with signs and symptoms that point to Teddy’s own diagnosis of a mental disorder. That maybe Teddy isn’t exactly on the island for an investigation but has his own hidden secrets to uncover.

By educating about mental illnesses in schools, activists are hoping to increase understanding about the topic and prevent teenagers who have mental illnesses from feeling alone.
