Why Did The First Settle In Jamestown

There were 110 men willing to risk everything they had to have a new lease on life. These men were headed to Jamestown, the first permanent settlement. By the end of December only 40 settlers would survive. So, why did so many colonist die? Well many colonists died because of their water supply, their relationship with the natives, and because of their knowledge of survival. These factor lead to early death for most of the colonist.

The Jamestown settlement is located in Virginia, it was the first permanent english settlement. They decided to settle there because it was hard for enemies to reach them through the narrow channel, and the thick forest around them provided plenty of lumber and the water surrounding them provided fish. The British colonies in the Chesapeake region and those of the New England region were both similar yet different in certain ways. One because both the colonist that settled there were looking for new opportunities. However, it was mostly second son aristocrats, which means the first born usually inherits the better half of the father’s riches. Their lives in England had either been mistreated or they were unable to flourish economically. Regardless of whether they were searching the land for expansive homesteads, religious freedom, or exchanging and merchant opportunities, the colonist in both regions were searching for another land in the New World. In 1607, English Colonists set out on three ships and sailed up the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. They planned to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America. Many colonists died at early Jamestown. There were many reasons the English settlers died at early Jamestown, including their relationship with the local Native Americans, issues with the environment, and their skills.

During 1607-1611, early Jamestown colonists died to many reasons like starvation, occupations, and drought. Colonists did not have many resources to live a long life. That is why they died so fast through 1607-1611. Colonists died because they tried to find a new settlement for more land so they can have more resources and for a stronger defense, but instead they got attacked and there was not a lot of food there to feed them all. Looking back to the 1500s, the English had been situating settlements in Ireland and used a familiar model in the New World. The early years of Jamestown were difficult for the settlers. The land was hot, humid, and mosquito-infested, and the settlers were mostly aristocrats and artisans that spent much of their time searching for gold. Those who didn’t die on the trip, died once they arrived from diseases and starvation. In 1607, about 3 ships-each holding more than 100 English passengers, arrived on the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia. Settlers were excited, given that they would be the first permanent colony in the New World. Most settlers were in search for riches and others in search of a new home. Settlers ranged from the ages of 17 to 35 years old. The first years for the English settlers were harsh and devastating. By 1611, two-thirds of the settlement had died and all hope was lost for the settlers. The 3 main circumstances that caused a majority of English colonists at Jamestown to lose their lives were the environment, the social and religious conflicts with the Natives, and the lack of survival skills.

John Smith and William Bradford journeyed to uncharted lands with different intentions. Both men shared similar occurrences, but handled each situation with a different mean. Whether the intent was guided by hope of riches or religious freedom, the authors faced many hardships. The speech, objective, and mood deviate from and correspond to William and John’s accounts.

They came and settled later than Jamestown did, and settled a different area. The leader of the colony was William Bradford, and moreover, he cared about his people. He helped people of the colony live and work in the colony so they could succeed. Their main motive for coming to settle here was religious freedom. Subsequently, they considered the land ¨God´s providence¨. In the same way, because of the religion they believed in, sets the beliefs of the colony. To elaborate, the people all helped each other work and strive in the community. Families came to this colony for the chance to be free, so they came together to help each other live. Most people who settled here were families from England. To review, they all came together because they believed that God was what caused everything in the universe to happen.

The king of England, (James I) sent 3 ships in 1607 carrying 100+ people to Jamestown, Virginia. They all hoped to become rich, find gold, and get their own piece of land. This was going to be the 1st permanent english settlement in the new world.

There are many reasons why England’s colonies were found but I believe the colonies were founded because of different religious beliefs, lack of resources, and just expanding rule not only in England but in another territory. The first settlers from England left their homeland because of their different views on religion, so rather than being tried for different crimes in England they came to North America. America was also full of resources that England didn’t have due to the climate. These resources made thee English government to expand the country’s rule in other territories, so the country’s journeyman settled in different colonies along the eastern seaboard. Some of the southern motivations were indentured servants which wanted  a new chance.Then  there  was tobacco which basically turned into a way to get money! Basicly, the indentured servants were regularly from England, and did not have money to sail to Virginia. So then they had to become a servant to pay the voyage. The servants worked for a “master” for a period of time under a contract. They usually worked on tobacco. They were given food and a place to live. The “Master” payed their way! Next, one thing that saved Jamestown was tobacco. At that time tobacco was unknown in Europe. But it was shipped to Europe and got very popular. Soon tobacco was the basis of jamestown's economy! People wanted to grow tobacco in Virginia to get money. This is two of the southern colonies motivations. These motivations was leading to a BETTER LIFE!
