“Why Everyone Shouldn 't go to College” by Valerie Strauss in 2012 in The Washington Post is a reprint of Larry Cuban’s blogpost which states his opinion on college. Cuban expresses heresy to the popular idea that college is an important, practically necessary step in life. The author supports his claim by pointing out several facts that counter the accepted idea of what college is. Cuban’s purpose is to persuade his audience to see the flaws in the current education system in order for there to be a reform in the education system. Cuban writes in a very factual tone, making claims of fact and policy, as he writes for potential college students and their parents. Overall, the writing tactics Cuban uses, such as appealing emotion, makes a compelling argument. However, the author’s use of logic is only halfway complete. As well as the fact, he fails to effectively make his work credible. The authors work is not persuasive because all three of these elements together is required to make a persuasive standpoint. In conclusion, the blog post by Larry Cuban “Why Everyone Shouldn 't go to College” does a good job to make the reader question some facts about our current education system. Overall, Cuban’s use of writing tactics excel in some areas, but fail in others. Such as, Cubans use of pathos, appealing emotion, does a good job. However, the author’s use of logic, or logos, is only moderately effective. On top of all, Cuban fails to effectively build ethos by making his work credible. The authors work is not persuasive because all three of these elements together is required to make a persuasive standpoint. This resulted in making the blog post a good food for thought.
