Academic ethics are the moral codes or the shared standards of an academic enterprise and the core of its success (Occidental College, 2016). Basically, academic ethics require each student, to be honest, responsible, fair, respectful, give credit where it is due, turn in original work, and etc. (Michigan State University, n.d.). Academic integrity requires students to do their own work without unauthorized help from others, cheating, lying, plagiarizing, and stealing (Valdosta State University, 2016). Making a personal choice to commit an unethical act can lead to corruption in a professional career, and tarnish and discredit a professional reputation, for example bringing contraband to inmates. Staying true to your own personal values can be beneficial in your professional career, especially when it comes to making a sound an ethical decision, for example, reporting a co-worker who is using the organization’s resources for financial gains. Making a personal choice to cheat and lie just to pass a course can negatively impact your professional career in the future because more than likely the person will continue to lie and cheat just to get over until they are caught and terminated. Making a personal choice to falsify academic records just to pass a course or obtain a degree can negatively impact a professional career because the educational facility will maintain a record of the offense and this can hinder professional career hiring or advancement. Good ethics is an essential qualification to all professional and academic career. Being dishonest can sabotage my integrity, as well as, cause others to lose trust in me. If I take shortcuts on my job, falsify reports, and etc. it can place the public in danger because the Parole Board can base their parole decision for an inmate from the documentation in the case file. Falsifying case files is a crime, it is unethical, and can hurt the organization (Employsure, 2016). Possessing good ethics in the workplace set guidelines between what is appropriate and what is not. I will maintain professional ethics in my workplace by providing the best services to my clients (inmates), maintaining a professional level of respect from the inmates and my co-workers, and dressing and behaving appropriately. Maintaining good ethics in my work environment will increase my employer’s confidence that I will perform my job functions independently and effectively, without being watched (Siddiqui, 2014). I will maintain my academic ethics by completing all of my assignments on my own.
