The Treaty of Paris was represented in Paris in a hotel named Hotel d'York. The Continental Congress called five member to negotiate the treaty. The British and the Americans that represented their country was Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay and David Hartley. The Treaty of Paris is important in history because it helped stop the wars like the American Revolution that started in 1765 and with the Treaty it brought more hope to the colonists. During the war between France and Britain in 1793, the U.S. decided to remain neutral. However, the Jay’s Treaty is what infuriates the French government. After the U.S. and Britain signed the treaty and recognized Britain as the most favored nation trading status, the French became annoyed and seized U.S. merchant ships. They also refused to receive Charles Cotesworth Pinckney from George Washington as a minister to France. After John Adams became president in 1797, he sends John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry along with Charles to restore peace from France.

At this point in time however, France and Britain are enemies, so in retaliation, France started seizing American ships. Two months into his presidency, Adams called a special session of Congress to discuss what should be done about the French’s ongoing actions. Just like Washington did, Adams met with his advisors prior to meeting with Congress, to discuss their potential course of action, and then informed Congress of his plans to negotiate with France by sending three American diplomats over to France to negotiate. However, when the diplomat’s arrived in France, they were told that they would only be able to initiate negotiation with the French Foreign Minister in exchange for a bribe. The diplomat’s took this attempt at bribery offensively, and the diplomat’s left France before any formal negotiations took place.

Everyone played a very important role in the Constitutional Convention or the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Constitutional Convention is rather known for attempting to modify the Articles of Confederation, but the delegates came up with the Virginia Plan which divided the powers within 3 branches of government. The signing of the Declaration of Independence is the most significant event in American History. What many may know as 13 of the 50 states of America before were 13 colonies of the British Empire. The Declaration of Independence was a document stating that they are no longer a part of the British Empire, who which they were at war with at the time.
Finally, this led to the need for another Continental Congress. The Patriot leaders had to discuss the issue. This was important because there were many different ways the colonists wanted to resolve the issue and they wanted to find the most logical one. The colonist had to compromise before they took action.
Hamilton however disagreed with Jefferson’s position of keeping the treaties with France. Hamilton saw the British as a natural ally to the United States and wanted the United States to align with Britain and cut treaties with France. France had established a new government during this time, which Hamilton used as his reasoning to pursue President Washington to void treaties with France. According to Hamilton, the United Sates would not have been dishonoring its treaties because the United Sates had made treaties with the previous French government only. As a result all treaties could have been voided because there was a new French government.

The French were mad at the United States for signing that treaty so Adams sent over Pinckney to negotiate with the French. Three agents told Pinckney that if he wanted to speak to the French Minister of Foreign Affairs he would have to pay a quarter of a million dollars just to speak to him. Then the minister wanted a twelve million dollar loan. John Adams then referred to the agents as “X”, “Y”, and “Z” when telling congress of this incident. By Adams referring to the agents as “X”, “Y”, and “Z” and not by their real names helped the nation not get into a war.
